GROUP STUDY QUESTIONS The 10 C ommandments Ex odus 20:1-17 Read vv1-2. Why do you think God says these words right before giving The 10 Commandments? Read v3. What is the first commandment? Why is this first? Does this mean there are other gods? Is God saying it’s okay to worship other gods as long as He’s first among them? If not, what does this commandment mean? How are we sometimes possibly guilty of worshipping other “gods”? What are some of the “gods” we sometimes worship? Read vv4-6. How does this differ from the first commandment? People today may not be guilty of making a statue of God to worship, but many in today’s world try to make God into an image they like. Do you think this is breaking the 2nd commandment? Why or why not? Why do you think people try to make God into an image they like, instead of worshipping the God of the Bible? What does it mean that God is jealous? What does it mean that God “punishes” our children for our sin of idolatry? Read v7. What’s the 3rd commandment? What do you think it means to take God’s name in vain or use God’s name in a worthless way? Why is this forbidden? Read vv8-11. What’s the 4th commandment? What does Sabbath mean? Why do you think God commands us to take a day off? Does it matter what we do on our Sabbath?
Does it have to be a certain day? Does it have to be Saturday? Does it have to be Sunday? Read Romans 14:5-6 to inform your answer. Read v12. What’s the 5th commandment? What does it mean to honor your father and mother? How do we teach our children to honor us? How does this commandment apply to us as adult children? How do we apply this commandment as adult children if we grew up in dysfunctional homes with abusive parents? Read v13. What’s the 6th commandment? Does this mean it’s wrong to kill? Does this apply to selfdefense, defending our country, justifiable war, or police officers? Why or why not? Does this commandment apply to abortion? Read Exodus 21:22-23, Galatians 1:5, Isaiah 44:2, Job 31:5, and Psalms 139:13-16 to inform your answer. According to those verses do you think that from God’s perspective life starts at conception? If anyone in your group has had an abortion make sure they do not leave feeling buried by guilt and condemnation! Remind them of Hebrews 8:12 and I John 1:8-9. Read Matthew 5:21-22. In these verses Jesus is teaching us that if we hate another person, we are guilty of committing murder in our hearts. Why do you think He taught this? Read Proverbs 18:21 and James. 1:26. How can we be guilty of taking life from people with our words?
