GROUP STUDY QUESTIONS The 10 Commandments Part 3 Exodus 20:1-17 The 8th commandment is: Don’t steal (v15). Obviously, this means not taking that which doesn’t belong to us, but there are more subtle ways we can be guilty of breaking this commandment. Do you think cheating our taxes is “stealing”? Why or why not? Do you think wasting time at work could be a form of stealing? Why or why not? Do you think people who take advantage of services they don’t really need (like disability for example) are stealing? Why or why not? Do you think it’s possible to steal from God? Read Malachi 3:7-11 to inform your answer. How does God say the Israelites are robbing Him? What does tithing mean? What do you think God means when He says they are under a curse because they aren’t tithing? What does God promise them if they will start tithing? Why do you think God tells them to test Him in this? Do you think tithing applies to us today under the New Covenant? Why or why not? There are some biblical principles for the giving God blesses. One of them is to give the first and best (see Proverbs 3:9-10 and I Corinthians 16:2). Why does God want us to bring Him the first of our income and not the leftovers? The other principles come from 2 Corinthians 9:6-8. God wants generous givers who do not give out of compulsion, but rather cheerfully. What does it mean to give generously? What does it mean to not give out compulsion? How can we be cheerful givers?
Then 9th commandment is: Don’t lie (v16). How does God feel about liars? Read Revelation 21:8 and 22:15 to inform your answer. Why do you think He feels this way about liars? Read Psalm 12:2. How is flattery a form of dishonesty and manipulation? Do you think gossip (talking negatively about a person when they aren’t present) could be a violation of the 9th commandment? Why or why not? Read Proverbs 18:8. Why do you think people love gossip so much? Why do you think people are so prone to gossip? Why do you think gossip is so often looked upon as a “lesser” sin, than sins like adultery? Is it? Why or why not? Then 10th commandment is: Don’t covet (v17). What does it mean to covet? Why is this a sin? How can coveting negatively impact our lives? The remedy to coveting is contentment. Read Philippians 4:12-13. Based on these verses contentment is something we can learn. How do you think we learn this? What do you think the secret to contentment is?
