Hapkido Class Syllabus Instructor: Katy O’Brian BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Hapkido, “The way of coordinated power,” is an eclectic and adaptive Korean martial art that implements joint locks, throws, strikes, and weapons (knife, cane, stick, and hanbo). Students will learn defense maneuvers, blocking, strikes and kicks, joint manipulation, throws, submission and compliance techniques, off-balancing techniques, and basic knife, stick, cane, and hanbo strikes and defenses along with close-range firearm defense as well as the traditional etiquette and discipline of Hapkido. LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS:     

Improve body mechanics and technique implementation Build a repertoire of techniques for self-defense Gain knowledge of the history and traditions of Hapkido Increase self-confidence and situational awareness Reflect on virtues and values of Kunja and its application

WEEKLY CLASS OUTLINE: Week 1: Introduction to etiquette and principles of Hapkido. Learn proper fighting stance and basic blocks and body movement. Week 2: Add to blocks and body movement. Incorporate proper form for throwing strikes and moving while striking. Week 3: Introduce kicks, proper falling technique and rolls. Work on moving around on the ground and standing tactically into a fighting stance. Week 4: Work kicking and striking combinations and learn basic defenses against kicks and strikes. Week 5: Situational attacks from the front. Learn grabs and escapes from arms pinned and arms free. Week 6: Learn proper choke technique from the front and back and defenses against chokes.

Week 7: Defense for situational attacks from the rear: arms pinned and free. Week 8: Review and add basic off-balancing techniques.
