A ‘Hardy’ effort
N
Northwest Nazarene has itself a champion golfer. Nick Hardy turned in his career low round on Tuesday, a 4-under 68, to claim his first tournament title, winning the Sonoma State Men’s Golf Invitational by four strokes. The victory is the first individual tournament title for an NNU golfer since the program joined the ranks of NCAA Division II golf in 2000. Hardy’s 68 also ties the school record for the single-round low score. The victory wrapped up an impressive fall season for the Crusader golf teams, as the men continued to climb in tournament standings, finishing sixth as a team at the Sonoma State Men’s Golf Invitational, led by Hardy’s victory. The women’s team, meanwhile, set reAbove: Nick Hardy poses with his championship trophy Tuesday cord after record in their second season after winning the Sonoma State Men’s Golf Invitational. The final record effort came Monday, as the Crusader women’s team shot a 323, part of a third-place effort at the Vikes Shootout hosted by the University of Victoria (B.C.). NNU followed up its record effort with a 326 on Tuesday. And, along with the team-score record, freshman Samantha Miller set the individual standard with a round of 74 on Friday, Oct. 4, at the St. Martin’s Invitational. Both Hardy and Miller also were recognized as GNAC Red Lion Golfers of the Week during the fall season. “This is a great way to wrap up the fall season,” NNU golf coach Craig Stensgaard said. “We have this taste in our mouth to think about all winter and that’s awesome.”

Crusader teams go unbeaten
VOLLEYBALL: The Crusaders continued to impress this season, and they got to do it at home Thursday and Saturday for just the third and fourth time in 14 outings. Thursday, NNU topped Montana State Billings, 25-14, 25-19, 27-29, 2516, then came back in front of more than 400 fans Saturday night and beat Seattle Pacific, 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15. The weekend wins truly proved to be team efforts as three players Thursday had double-digit kills — Elayna Rice (18), Taylor VanValey (15) and Photo by Loren Orr Andrea Terpstra (10) — and four players had double-digit kills in Saturday’s Kaitlyn Tuholski sets a ball during Thursday’s match. win — Rice (12), Kaitlyn Tuholski (10), Andrea Terpstra (10) and Jenna Caywood (10). Also highlighting the weekend was the play of two setters during the two different matches. Thursday, filling in for injured starter Michelle Terpstra, Tulhoski led NNU by dishing out 48 assists. Tuholski shared setting duties as a freshman in 2011 with Terpstra, but has played outside hitter for the last season and a half for NNU. Saturday, Terpstra returned to the starting lineup and dished out 47 assists in the Crusaders win. MEN’S SOCCER: After a fun-filled two-game homestand that saw NNU blank foes the University of Mary and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, the Crusader men hit the road and ran their shutout streak to three straight games. Unfortunately, NNU also failed to score, settling for a 0-0 tie at Montana State Billings on Saturday. Though not a win, the draw keeps NNU in the top of the GNAC standings, just a point behind Western Washington for third place. WOMEN’S SOCCER: After playing six of their first nine games away from the friendly confines of the NNU soccer field to start the 2013 season, a return home proved to be just what the Crusaders needed as the NNU women got a pair of GNAC points with a pair of 1-1 ties over the weekend. Despite grabbing two points, the weekend turned out to be heartbreaking, as well, as both Montana State Billings and Western Oregon scored late goals to thwart the Crusaders victory bids. The Yellowjackets scored with 17 seconds left in regulation, forcing the draw, and Western Oregon evened the score with 2:46 left in its match with NNU. MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders found out quickly this season that they will be the underdog in many opponents eyes, as the GNAC preseason coaches poll ranked NNU as eighth out of 10 teams. Seattle Pacific — ranked No. 1 in the nation in one Top 25 poll and No. 3 in another — was the near consensus favorite to win the league by the coaches, grabbing 9-of-10 first-place votes. Alaska Anchorage was the second pick, followed by defending league champion Western Washington. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The NNU women landed in the middle of the GNAC pack, tying for fourth with Simon Fraser in the preseason coaches poll. The Crusaders and SFU each garnered 69 points, while Montana State Billings was the top pick with 94 points, and six first-place votes. Seattle Pacific (80 points) was picked No. 2 and earned one first-place vote, and Photo by NNU Athletics Western Washington (78 points) was No. 3 and drew three first-place votes. NNU’s Lexi Fesenbek, right, brings the ball upfield.

• At 10-4 this season, the NNU volleyball team is off to its best start in more than a decade. The 2009 Crusaders started the season 8-4 before a five-set loss to Seattle Pacific. In 2007, NNU started the year 9-4 before a five-set loss to Alaska Fairbanks. The last team to surpass the 10-4 mark to start the season was the 2000 NNU squad. Then a member of the NCAA Division II Pac West, the 2000 Crusaders started the season 12-4. The NNU men’s soccer team and goalie Ryan Foo have posted three straight shutouts. The Crusader men have not been scored against in 367 minutes, 34 seconds. Despite being held scoreless Saturday by Montana State Billings, snapping his seven-game scoring streak, NNU’s Fredy Razo continues to lead the GNAC in goals (8) this season. Crusader volleyball player Andrea Terpstra is No. 16 in the nation in blocks per set (1.26). The NNU volleyball team is No. 16 in the country in blocks per set (2.46) and No. 35 in digs per set (17.50).

Argia Phillips
Making a total of 19 saves over the weekend and helping the Northwest Nazarene women’s soccer team earn two points in league play garnered Crusader goalkeeper Argia Phillips Great Northwest Athletic Conference Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Crusaders sophomore goalie from Meridian High made seven saves playing all 110 minutes in goal of NNU’s 1-1 tie with Montana State Billings on Thursday. Jenna Caywood
Northwest Nazarene’s depth on the volleyball court is shining through, as redshirt freshman Jenna Caywood’s contributions this past week earned her Great Northwest Athletic Conference Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Crusaders’ 6-foot-2 middle blocker, from Cole Valley Christian in Meridian, racked up 14 blocks during two matches as NNU beat Montana State Billings in four sets on Thursday, then topped Seattle Pacific in four sets on Saturday. Along with 14 blocks, Caywood also hit an impressive .452, with 17 kills and just three hitting errors in 31 attacks, on the weekend, making her a weapon offensively as well as blocking.
