HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY! GIRLS BASKETBALL: Northstars shake off rust, down Catholic Central 50-43; next heads to NYC

More than a month had passed since practices got underway for the Cicero-North Syracuse girls basketball team, and it had just one game in the books - a Dec. 6 win at Bishop Kearney. Weather (thanks to the snowout of a Dec. 10 game with Liverpool), and a schedule with big tournaments on the horizon, had limited the Northstars' game activity, and head coach Eric Smith said his players were tired of facing each other and wanted to get back into game action. Finally, the 12-day break ended for C-NS on Thursday night, when it faced Section II's Catholic Central in its home opener. Led by the duo of McKayla Roberts and Emilee Norris, the Northstars got away in the second half and beat the Crusaders 50-43. Catholic Central posed a healthy challenge, with its lineup led by senior Madison Purcell, who is headed to Le Moyne College next fall, and it seemed to catch C-NS at just the right time, given the way things started. Other than back-door cuts and screens with Roberts as the focal point, the Northstars' offense struggled throughout the opening minutes. But CCHS never took full advantage, only gaining a 14-10 lead late in the first quarter. They stayed on even terms for most of the first half, only because Roberts, with her quickness and deft moves to the basket, was carrying C-NS along with 17 points in the half. But back-to-back baskets from Norris and Beth Bonin allowed the Northstars to move in front, 28-24, going into the break. As it turned out, the Crusaders would never lead again. Norris, the lone senior on a C-NS roster mostly filled with juniors, hit on six of her 16 points during the third quarter, aided by freshman Amani Free (who sang the national anthem before the game), who hit on five straight points. Roberts returned to hit a basket right before the third-quarter buzzer, extending the lead to 4433, just part of a night where the energetic 5-foot-3 junior would pour in 24 points, nearly half her team's output. Gradually, the mix of C-NS defensive looks, ranging from a 2-3 zone to man-to-man pressure, had an effect, even on Purcell, who was held to 12 points. That defense helped C-NS overcome a five-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter and never let the Crusaders get closer than seven the rest of the way. Two days later, the traveling circuit began for C-NS as it would meet a pair of New York City-based foes in a tournament at Francis Lewis High School in Queens.

What the Cicero-North Syracuse boys basketball team demonstrated, in beating Nottingham in its Dec. 6 opener, was that it still had the goods to win plenty of games, even with Connor Evans forced to the sidelines for the winter. But that didn’t mean the Northstars were free and clear, by any means. Top contenders like Henninger remain a major challenge, something C-NS found out, up-close, when it lost, 67-49, to the Black Knights in last Tuesday night’s home opener. During the same Peppino’s Invitational where the Northstars had beaten Nottingham, Henninger, the host team, had won twice, fighting off CBA (78-72) and Troy (68-62) with fine efforts from the tandem of Romero Collier and Shaitique Blatche. Now, at C-NS, the Black Knights didn’t let down, even during a first half where several of its starters got into foul trouble and the Northstars faced right up to them, seizing a 9-6 lead late in the first quarter. Henninger countered with an 8-0 run to close the period, and moved ahead for good. Then, during the second period, senior K.J. White scored 11 points, seven of them in the span of less than a minute, and the Northstars, despite plenty of effort and energy, trailed, 34-21, at the break. The deficit got as large as 18, 39-21, early in the third quarter before C-NS used an 11-3 run to creep back into it. But it would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way, Henninger’s pressure leading to baskets on the other end. White finished with a game-high 22 points, with Collier earning 11 assists and four steals to go with his 13 points as Blatche added 16 points and Terrence Walker grabbed 10 rebounds. On C-NS’s side, Brendan Gacek put together a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Nick Antonello had 15 points and eight rebounds, while A.J. Nesci dished out six assists. Aside from Gacek and Antonello, tough, no other Northstars player had more than two field goals. On Friday night, C-NS stayed home to face Fayetteville-Manlius, the team it knocked off in last year’s Section III Class AA semifinal. Having seen all-time leading scorer John Schurman graduate (he’s now at Binghamton University), F-M had lost its opener to West Genesee, but perhaps remembering what happened a season ago, it came to C-NS and brought lots of defensive energy, which made the difference as it defeated the Northstars 49-41. F-M gained a 15-8 lead through one period, and then watched as its trademark 1-3-1 zone got locked in early, and would bother C-NS throughout the contest. Any time the Northstars tried to inch closer, F-M had a quick answer, usually from Nick Quilty-Koval, who produced 18 points and six rebounds, establishing himself as an inside force. David Stegemann added eight points and eight rebounds. And it was a big day for F-M’s senior point guard, Jake Wittig. Not only did he dish out nine assists to go with six rebounds, four steals and five points, he announced that he would attend the University of Rochester next fall. Theetge, with 15 points and five rebounds, and Antonello, with 11 points and four rebounds, accounted for most of C-NS’s production. No other player had more than two field goals. Having fallen to 1-2 on the season, C-NS looks to break the skid at head coach John Haas’s alma mater, CBA, on Tuesday night, its only action this week.

WRESTLING: C-NS wrestlers open up CNYCL with 42-33 win over Auburn Wins by Zachary Sweeney, Joseph Barber, and a pin by Josh Bigford lead Cicero-North Syracuse to a 42-33 victory over Auburn in a CNYCL match on Wednesday. Sweeney (120) scored a 10-8 decision over Auburn's Erich Ansteth while the Northstars Joseph Barber (126) earned a 6-3 win over the Maroon's Austin Duger. A pin by C-NS wrestler Josh Bigford (152) over John Leone in 2:40 gave the Northstars a 36-9 lead. Auburn rallied with win by Parker Hogan, (170) Aiden Rubeck (182), Michael Hamilton (195) and Julian Bernard (220) all scored victories. But a forfeit at the 285 weight class sealed the win for C-NS. BOYS INDOOR TRACK: CNS finishes 2nd at Morse Kickoff meet A mere 11 days after they ran in the Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon, Liverpool's Dylan McCarthy, Connor Buck, Ty Brownlow and Nick LeClair were part of a winning effort when the boys indoor track season got underway at SRC Arena with the Jack Morse Kickoff Meet. All told, the Warriors picked up 65 points to fend off Cicero-North Syracuse, who took second with 57 points. Baldwinsville took third place with 46 points. Nearly one-quarter of Liverpool's points came from a 1-2 sweep of the mile, where McCarthy made his way to the top spot in four minutes, 36.36 seconds and Buck, in 4:38.28, grabbed second place. Meanwhile, LeClair finished second in the 600-meter run in 1:29.93 as B'ville's Arden Kellner prevailed in 1:28.44 and C-NS's Jared George was third in 1:31.52. Brownlow made his way to third place in the 3,200meter run in 10:28.97, where the Northstars' Chris Hannan (10:28.65) grabbed second place. Liverpool's other title was earned in the sprints, courtesy of Brandon Mayfield, who went to the 55-meter dash and, in 6.86 seconds, edged out Nottingham's Shaheed Dickerson and CBA's Tom SanGiacomo, who both posted 6.87 seconds. Mayfield was fourth in the long jump, going 18 feet 5 1/2 inches as teammate Rashan Crenshaw (18'2 1/2") was sixth. Also, Mayfield joined Jamie Gadaleta, Collin Gwilt and Donald Frost as Liverpool was third in the 4x200 relay in 1:41.27, just ahead of C-NS's quartet of Matt Romanyk, Corey Mitchell, Daquan Mathis and Ryan Massena, who was fourth in 1:42.09. For the Northstars, Andrew Bearkland was victorious in the 1,000-meter run, going 2:46.42 as Jamesville-DeWitt's Patrick Dye (2:47.29) took second place. Moving to the pole vault, Mark Hentges won by clearing 12 feet 6 inches, with Liverpool's David Lewis topping 11 feet for third place. C-NS also saw Edward Mahana take third place in the 55meter hurdles in 8.48 seconds, with George Reader fourth in the triple jump by going exactly 38 feet and fifth (5'6") int the high jump. Ross Matheson had a fifth-place shot put toss of 40'1 1/2". Mahana, Zach Kennedy, Collin Ryan and Matt Williams were fourth (3:47.95) in the 4x400 relay as Liverpool's quartet of Gadaleta, Frost, Gwilt and Macadian Lellis were third, inches ahead of C-NS, in 3:47.82.
