HEADLINES Union College (1-2-2) opens ECAC Hockey play this week, traveling to Dartmouth (0-2-0) on Friday (Nov. 1) before facing Harvard (1-0-1) Saturday in Cambridge, MA. The Dutchmen have captured the Cleary Cup as ECAC regular season champions two of the past three seasons. Union has placed a lot of rubber on net the last two games, taking 49 shots against UConn (Oct. 25) and 48 against Lake Superior State (Oct. 19). Union has outshot opponents in all five games this season and is averaging 37.4 shots per game. Opposing teams, meanwhile, are averaging 22.0 shots against. Senior F Kevin Sullivan’s breakout year has him sharing top honors in scoring among ECAC players with nine points -- all coming on assists. He needs just one more assist to match his career high of 10 (accomplished last season). The Darien, CT native is also six points shy of equaling his best season for points (15), established last year. Senior Daniel Carr stands as the NCAA’s top iron man, having appeared in 126 consecutive games, according to collegehockeystats.net. Carr, who has not missed a game during his career, holds a slight lead over Chase Balisy of Western Michigan (125), Michael Mersh of Wisconsin (124) and Minnesota’s Nate Condon (123). Carr, incidentally, ranks fifth in career scoring among active players with 113 points (58 goals, 55 assists). Tickets are now on sale for the second annual Mayor’s Cup game between Union and RPI on Jan. 25 at the Times Union Center in Albany. Tickets, priced at $10 for students and youths and $15 for adults, may be purchased online at UnionAthletics.com.

Last week In their road debut, the Dutchmen skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at Connecticut. Union built a 2-0 first period lead behind goals from Mark Bennett (1st) and Mike Vecchione (2nd). UConn answered with a pair of goals in the second period then held on for the tie after being outshot, 49-23. Union was held scoreless (0-for-2) on the power play for the first time this season as only four penalties were called in the game.

UNION NOTEBOOK Junior G Colin Stevens took part in his first practice last week since suffering an upper body injury just seven minutes into the season opener. He dressed as the backup at UConn and is listed as day-to-day ... Freshman F Michael Pontarelli continues to lead the nation in power play goals with four PPGs in five games (0.80 avg). He also ranks fifth among rookie scorers nationally (1.40 ppg) ... The Dutchmen sport the sixth-best power play percentage (29 percent, 9-for-31) in the country ... Union returns home next week (Nov. 8-9) to host Colgate and Cornell.

STREAKS & milestones u Coach Rick Bennett’s next win will be the 50th for his career. u Daniel Carr needs one goal to equal the school’s all-time Division I record held by Mario Valey-Trabucco (2006-10). u Mat Bodie is three assists shy of tying Jason Walters (2006-10 for fourth place in Division I career assists at Union.

SCOUTING REPORTS Dartmouth opened its 2013-14 campaign last week at the inaugural Liberty Invitational held Oct. 25-26 in Newark, NJ. The Big Green lost the opener to Princeton, 3-2, in overtime despite owning a 40-20 shot advantage. Eric Neiley forced overtime by scoring an extra attacker goal with 37 seconds left in regulation. Dartmouth lost to Brown,

5-2, in the third place game, rallying from three separate deficits only to give up a pair of goals in the closing minutes. Head coach Bob Gaudet is in his 26th season in Hanover and owns a career record of 327-370-90. Harvard opened ECAC action with a 3-3 overtime tie at No. 10 Rensselaer Tuesday night (Oct. 29). The Crimson fell behind, 3-0, in the first period before rallying to knot the contest mid-way through the third period. Harvard features nine NHL draft picks on its roster, with the highest selection belonging to sophomore forward Brian Hart, a second round pick (53rd overall) of the Tampa Bay Lighting in 2012.
