Objective: Your child will understand more about the body systems and how
important it is to take care of the body. Your child will gain an understanding of how cycling helps create a healthier body.
Tour of Utah: Cyclists who compete at a professional level take
care of their bodies by eating and drinking healthy and training every day. The athletes competing in the World Championships are some of the best athletes in the world and train year-round to stay in peak condition for their competitions.
Children will: Identify major organs in their body. Understand the importance of food and how and what we eat can impact how we feel. Start to understand the importance of movement as part of an overall healthy lifestyle. Reinforce the importance of being visible when riding bikes.
Materials: Activity Sheet
paper, crayons or markers, tape, scissors, Body Organs
1. Ask your child to tell you what they know about what each of the organs on the Body Organs Activity Sheet does in the body. 2. Ask your child what a body has in common with a bike. (They both get you to where you need to go, you keep them both tuned up, etc.) 3. Discuss with your child what it means to be visible to automobiles and people. Talk about ways they can be more visible including wearing bright 4. Discuss that we are what we eat, drink, and breathe. We must eat healthy, drink healthy, and breathe clean air for a healthy body. 5. Talk about how cycling, running, and active play affects our body by exercising muscles.
Health and Nutrition Activity: 1. Cut out the illustrations (brain, bone, heart, lungs, and stomach) and ask your child to tape each one on the place in his or her body where this organ or body system resides. 2. Draw a picture of your favorite healthy breakfast. 3. Be Visible. When it is dark, when it rains and even when the sun shines b other people. When you wear bright clothing, it is easier for other people to see you. 4. Draw a picture of you on your bike wearing bright colors. 5. Read the following passage and answer questions about the importance of being visible. It was a cold and windy day. Dark clouds raced across the sky and leaves swirled in the wind. Mike decided to ride his bike to school even though the weather was bad. He wore a blue jacket with black pants. It was windy so he pulled a grey parka down over his helmet to cover his ears. He rode down the driveway and started off to school. 1. What is the weather like on the day Mike decides to ride his bike to school? 2. What did Mike wear to school that day? 3. Are people likely to see Mike easily?
Bike Safety
Increase your visibility by wearing bright colors when you ride your bike. This helps cars and people see you!
Bike Fitness
Riding a bicycle requires strong legs and strong lungs. Do a high knee lift switching from one leg to the other and count to 30. Always breathe deeply when exercising.
What did we learn? It is important to take care of our body to be healthy. We learned about important organs and muscles, and muscle cramps. Our bodies need exercise and bicycling is a good exercise. Eating healthy food, regular meals, and right-sized meals is also good for our bodies.
