Caleb Meyer—Grand Champion Doe SALE
A large number of Blanco FFA and Jr. FFA members exhibited livestock at this year’s San Antonio Livestock Exposition with several qualifying for the premium sale. “We are extremely pleased and proud of what our FFA members and their families accomplished at this year’s show,” said FFA Advisor Jason Marek. “San Antonio is without a doubt one of the hardest shows to make the sale at, so for these exhibitors, this is a big accomplishment.” Headlining this year’s accomplishments was Blanco Jr. FFA member Caleb Meyer, who exhibited the Grand Champion Doe in the Jr. Breeding Boer Goat Show. As a result of his success, Caleb was presented a $10,000 SALE Scholarship in addition to his prize money. Caleb also did well in two market shows placing 2nd with his market goat and 5th with his Fine Wool market lamb, both of which qualified for the premium sale. “Wow!” said Caleb. “It’s an unbelievable feeling to know that your animal is the best at such a big show, and then to win a scholarship is awesome!” In addition, Walker and Tobi Alexander did extremely well with each placing a barrow in the premium sale as Walker exhibited a 3rd place Hampshire barrow and Tobi exhibited a 3rd place Dark Cross barrow. Binge Drinking—Drowning in Alcohol Part III
As part of our effort to reduce substance abuse by our young people, The Bell will be running Public Service Announcements each week to educate students and parents in regards to substance abuse. Today’s information comes from a pamphlet titled “Binge Drinkink—Drowning in Alcohol,” published by Education Specialty Publishing, LLC, 2010. Distributed by Hays Caldwell Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
Is Binge Drinking the Same as Alcoholism? Binge drinking is not alcoholism, but binge drinkers are more likely to become alcoholics. The disease of alcoholism worsens over time until alcoholics crave alcohol and can’t limit their drinking. They continue to drink in spite of the real problems it causes in their lives. Alcoholics need more and more alcohol to feel the same effect. It’s a true, physical addiction, complete with painful withdrawal symptoms. And it can happen to anyone. What are the Long-Term Health Consequences of Using Alcohol? Heavy or long-term drinking causes irreversible, often fatal damage to the body. Effects include: Liver diseases; Heart disease and stroke; Brain cell death; Cancer of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, breast, pancreas, liver, colon, and rectum; Limited normal growth in young people; Damage to eyes and skin; Malnutrition and gastric illnesses. Women who are—or could be—pregnant must not drink any alcohol! Alcohol use during pregnancy is the #1 cause of nonhereditary mental retardation and causes lifelong hyperactive behavior and learning disabilities.
