Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections
PA R ENTS PAGE February 20-22, 2011 Embracing Risks—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): Say: Youth groups do mission work together and adult groups do mission work as well. But it would draw me even closer to you if we did a mission project together. For example, I think it would be great if we went in together to . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Numbers 13:1-3,21-30 and Joshua 14:5-14. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these passages. Truth • Christ calls believers to join Him on kingdom adventures that may involve risk. Untruths • Jesus just wants His children to be happy and have easy lives. • Using our logic can eliminate all the risks in life. • Sacrifice and risk do not fit into my idea of religion. 3. Explore Scripture: Read aloud Numbers 13:1-3,21-30. Point out that these verses show God calling His people to join Him on a great adventure. Say: But the people only saw the risks, and those risks eventually led them to reject God’s plan for them. Emphasize that this reaction showed a complete lack of trust in God and His promises since: • The people knew that God had promised Abraham that his descendants would occupy the promised land. Ask a family member to read Genesis 15:18. • The people knew that God had promised Moses that He would drive the inhabitants out of the land. Ask a family member to read Exodus 33:2. • The people had seen God destroy the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. Read Exodus 14:26-28. Tell your family that they too must decide whether they will follow Christ—regardless of risk. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this step. 5. Nail It Down: Read aloud Joshua 14:5-14. Remind your family that Caleb was just as willing to face risk when he was 85 as when he was younger. Say: He had lived his life in faithfulness because He had full confidence in God and God’s promises. Encourage your family members to have the same kind of confidence any time Christ invites them to join Him on kingdom adventures. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead this prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: I bless this family for its willingness to follow Christ on kingdom adventures no matter what the cost. Parent Tip: What kingdom risks have you taken? Children and teens learn well through stories and examples. This week, share a story about some kingdom risks you have taken in your life. Let your family members know how God has been faithful in your life. And evaluate your current attitude toward risks. How are you modeling risk today? Are you still open to whatever God has planned?
