Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE February 20-22, 2011 Embracing Risks—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: I enjoy experiences with the youth group, but I also would enjoy doing something for Jesus with you. Here is a second idea for some kind of service we could perform together . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Numbers 13:1-3,21-30 and Joshua 14:5-14 Truth • Christ calls believers to join Him on kingdom adventures that may involve risk. Untruths • Jesus just wants His children to be happy and have easy lives. • Using our logic can eliminate all the risks in life. • Sacrifice and risk do not fit into my idea of religion. 3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Ask each family member to name at least one location Christ could send your family on mission and one “giant” that might tempt you not to go. To spark their thinking, give them this example: God might send you to an inner city area where the giant might be the threat of gang violence. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Ask a family member to stand on something to make him or her a “giant.” Stand near that person. Include this thought in your prayer: Jesus, I worship You and consider it a privilege to join You on kingdom adventures. Give me Your eyes to see things as You do. I especially want to see giants as You do—tiny things of no consequence in Your purposes and plans. Give my family the courage to join You in Your kingdom activity no matter what the risk. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Ask your parents: Did you ever end a friendship when you were a teen? If so, how did you do it and why? If not, do you think you ever should have? If so, why? When they have completed their sharing, thank them for letting you get to know them better.
