Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections

PA R ENTS PAGE November 30—December 3, 2011 Seeing Everyone Worship God—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): Say: I will love your children. Someday I hope to talk to them about our family traditions. One of the traditions I will talk about is . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Psalm 86:8-10. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these verses. Truth • God’s actions result in all the nations worshiping and glorifying Him. Untruths • There is no reason to worship God. • Only bored Christians worry about glorifying God. • God has never done anything that would deserve worship. 3. Explore Scripture: Remind the family that David rose from a shepherd to become king. Emphasize that he had an affair with a married woman and ended up killing her husband, but God was merciful and forgave David’s sin. Say: David wrote this psalm in the form of a prayer. In that prayer, he gave several reasons for us to worship and glorify God. They are as follows: • There is no God like Jehovah. • No created being is able to do what God does. • All nations were created by God. • Nations will recognize God’s creative activity. Say: God is perfect, unique, and great. People from every nation should praise Him. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this step. 5. Nail It Down: Ask: Why did King David encourage all nations to worship God? Discuss responses. Say: David had witnessed God’s redemptive acts in his life, and God had protected David in many dangerous situations. David was grateful to God for saving his future and for helping him during hard times. Ask: When has God rescued you from disaster? Discuss responses. Say: David knew every nation would one day realize God is worthy of worship and praise because every nation will understand God’s greatness, goodness, and grace. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead this prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: May God bless you for being wise enough to worship Him daily. Parent Tip: Sensitive kids who mess up and are disciplined want to restore their relationship with their parents, but often they don’t know how. Parents who want to raise their children with grace must take the initiative to communicate that all is well and that the relationship is restored.
