Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections
PA R ENTS PAGE September 25-27, 2011 What Would Jesus Do?—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (A parent goes first today): Say: If I could follow the example of anyone in the Bible (aside from Jesus), I think it would be . . . I say that because . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Matthew 22:34-40. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these verses. Truth • We are to love God first and our neighbors second. Untruths • You only have to look out for yourself. • No one really cares about his or her neighbors anymore. • In the real world, you can’t really depend on anyone but yourself. 3. Explore Scripture: Explain that the lawyer wanted to know the “greatest” commandment because, at that time, there was a list of about 248 things Jews were supposed to do and about 365 things they were supposed to avoid. Say: Jesus said we should love God in every way possible and with everything that we are. Share that Jesus wanted us to know that it is not possible to love God without loving and caring about people. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this activity. 5. Nail It Down: Share that Jesus responded to the lawyer by repeating the most memorized verse in Jewish Scriptures. Read the following passage from Deuteronomy 6:4-5: Listen, Israel: Yahweh is our God; Yahweh is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Explain that Jesus substituted the word “mind” for “strength” in Matthew 22. Encourage your family to love God with every action, memory, thought, and experience. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead the prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: May God bless you for being faithful and for loving Him with all your heart, soul, and mind. Parent Tip: This week, have a conversation with your teenager about loving God and loving people. Determine some practical ways your family can demonstrate its love for God and identify some things you can do to show your love to other people. Make sure you plan some specific times to put the things you’ve listed into action.
