Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections
STUDENTS PAGE September 25-27, 2011 What Would Jesus Do?—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (A parent goes first today): When it’s your turn, say: Thanks for sharing. If I could follow the example of any Bible character (aside from Jesus), it would be . . . I say that because . . . Something from Heart Surprise I want to remember:
2. Read Scripture: Matthew 22:34-40
Truth • We are to love God first and our neighbors second. Untruths • You only have to look out for yourself. • No one really cares about his or her neighbors anymore. • In the real world, you can’t really depend on anyone but yourself.
3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.
4. Think It Through: Ask the family: Why did Jesus say we should love God first and then love our neighbors? Discuss responses. Ask: Which individuals in our world are difficult to love? After each person responds, say the name of the person or group and read the following aloud: God wants you to love them as much as you love yourself. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Close your eyes and say: Listen, Israel: I will love Yahweh, the Lord my God, with all my heart, soul, and mind. Invite each family member to offer the same prayer to God. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Everyone likes to see his or her name in print. Write your own personal newspaper article about an action one of your parents has taken to bless you. Describe the action as if it were one of the most significant events in your history. Explain how the action was beneficial and memorable to you and those you love. Be sure to post your article on the refrigerator door or some other prominent place.
