HILITES:

In the early 1880’s three brothers homesteaded the area north and west of Wood Lake. The three brothers settled this area and today most of their holdings have been sold to the children and others. The Ruth Heelan Ranch was one of the last to be sold after almost 128 years of ownership. Today the Ruth Heelan Ranch is known as the Fairfield Creek LLC. In 1882, the Chicago and the Northwestern Railroad was completed to Wood Lake, which is the oldest town site in Cherry County. Wood Lake soon became the largest cattle shipping point on the C&NW Railroad. In the early 1900’s Wood Lake’s population grew to about 500. Then came the stock market crash of 1929 and the blizzard of 1949. The last freight train passed through Wood Lake in 1992 and passenger trains were discontinued in 1958. Today the population of Wood Lake is less than 80 people and the only service to strangers is an excellent café. © Eddie Bohn Real Estate LLC.
