Historic Shady Lane Where Rustic Meets Elegance
From the second I found HSL online to when we met Lauren (who I'm obsessed with by the way) at our first visit we could not have imagined getting married anywhere else. I cannot, CANNOT recommend HSL or the staff any more highly. I assure you, you will not be disappointed either! —Katie & Russ (est. Oct. 2015) Photo by Sarah B Photography

The History
William Penn, the namesake of
Pennsylvania, took ownership of land, including Shady Lane.
1774 James Smith Esquire, a large proponent and signer of the Declaration of Independence, obtained the land from the Penn heirs. Smith used the land for lumber and to house workers for the Codorus Furnace.
1807 The Hake family purchased the estate and constructed the whiskey distillery, which still stands today. With its stone and

1825 Jacob Hake built the Main House for his family, which now is a private residence.
Circa 1900 Frederick Small, a York Industrialist and Harvard graduate, purchased the 34 acres for his summer home and to entertain guests. He added the green house, tennis court, bridal cottage, band stand and numerous other amenities.
