Accountability

A Typical School Day • Teachers have professional development meetings daily from 7:15-7:40 A.M. • Student breakfast is served in cafeteria daily from 7:15-7:40 A.M.

• Students enter halls at 7:40 A.M. • First period class begins at 7:50 A.M. • We have a 7-period day, and each class lasts ~ 48 minutes. • Lunch is either between 3rd and 4th periods or in the middle of 4th period, known as a “split lunch.”

• The school day ends at 2:34 P.M.

• Please require your student to utilize his/her student handbook/agenda to record daily classwork and homework assignments. Have your student show it to you every evening so that items can be checked off as they are completed. This will tell you not only what was covered in class each day, but also what the homework assignment may be. • Check Harmony consistently with your student. Sign up for text alerts. • Check grades, which are updated weekly when possible. • Check attendance – absences and tardies. • Check discipline – classroom and office referrals will be visible. • Check homework agenda – teachers post what’s happening in class. • Check assignment summaries for each class – you can see the scores your student has earned on each assignment in each class. • A zero means it was not turned in. • L means it was late. • E means it was excused and will not count against the student.

• For quickest response, e-mail teachers if you have class-specific questions or concerns ([email protected]). Teachers will do their best to respond within 24 hours. Please remember it might take longer if teacher was absent from school. • Another option is to phone (317) 831-9208 and ask secretary to leave a message for faculty member. • To set up a parent/teacher conference with all your student’s teachers, email guidance counselor, Mrs. Julie Reeves, or leave a phone message with your request. All conferences are set up through her. * Please understand that your student’s teachers have 180 students daily, not 25 like in elementary school, so they update Harmony regularly to communicate with you regarding grades, homework not being completed, and discipline issues. They encourage you to contact them when you have a question or concern, and they will be happy to work with you to ensure your student’s success. *

Grading Scale and Periods 90-100 = A 80-89 = B 70-79 = C 60-69 = D 0-59 = F • Report cards are e-mailed every 9 weeks (Oct., Jan., March, May), with midterm reports e-mailed halfway through the 9 weeks. • 1st and 2nd nine weeks’ grade averages = 1st semester grades. • 3rd and 4th nine weeks’ grade averages = 2nd semester grades. • Semester grades go on student’s transcript, not nine weeks’ grades. • Students keep the same teachers all year long except in Science and in World Languages/Intro to 2D Art elective. For those classes, students switch teachers when 2nd semester begins in January.

What in the World is an LIA??? • LIA stands for Locally Initiated Assessment. • Teachers from the same grade level and same subject area work collaboratively to create these assessments, using standards-based questions. • LIA’s are given each nine weeks’ grading period. • The 1st nine weeks’ and 3rd nine weeks’ assessments cover material only from the nine weeks. • The 2nd nine weeks’ and 4th nine weeks’ assessments cover first semester material and second semester material, respectively.
