Holy Spirit School would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Bindal and Wulgurukaba people, and pay our respects to the Elders both past, present and future for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hope of Indigenous Australia.

Principal’s Corner Over Monday and Tuesday night, 55 Holy Spirit students made the sacrament of Confirmation. This is a great time of year to make this sacrament as we celebrate the feast of Pentecost this weekend. Pentecost is the time when the Holy Spirit filled the apostles with gifts such as courage and understanding to conquer their fear and go out to spread the good news. It is also the day we recognise as the origin of the Catholic Church. At the Confirmation ceremonies, many of our students were much like the apostles and appeared nervous or anxious. It was wonderful to see the transformation to joy and even exuberance once the children had been confirmed. The sacrament of Confirmation is a great reminder for adults and children that we have the opportunity of a personal pentecost in our daily lives. When we choose patience, reconciliation, peace, joy, self control, tolerance we are spirit filled people. Thank you to the parish sacramental team and Miss Kellie Dwyer for the organisation of the celebration of the sacrament and to our staff who prepared the students over five Sundays. Congratulations to the boys and girls for their participation, we were very proud of you. Unlike schools that are named after catholic saints and holy people our school is named after the Holy Spirit, therefore Pentecost has particular significance for our students and school community. Next Wednesday, we will celebrate Holy Spirit Day with a liturgy for the whole school. God Bless,

Thank You

DIARY DATES

The Holy Spirit School Fete is a tribute to the community spirit that the school prides itself on. The fete does not just “happen” – many people give up countless hours of their own time to bring it all together. The role of the Fete Convenor is to ensure that all of these people work to achieve the same end – the Holy Spirit School Fete! No small task! This year Melissa Bonner took the plunge producing a tremendously successful fete. Congratulations Melissa, it’s wonderful to know that you will continue the school’s community spirit! All the best. All Australian governments have agreed to work together to implement a new annual national data collection on school students with disability. What does disability mean? This new national data collection will reinforce the actions required of schools under the National Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005.

Robotics at Holy Spirit Earlier this year, Holy Spirit School purchased the latest Lego EV3 robotics kits for small groups of students to learn programming.

The Lego EV3 Robotics kits are designed to give students a structured and fun way to learn the basics of computer programming. The programming is completed on the computer then sent to the robot to be executed. All groups of students have been wildly enthusiastic with the new robots and have begun exploring the potential of this program. The students have naturally progressed from learning the programming basics to now wanting to design their own challenges to test the capabilities of the robots.

KidsMatter — The need to belong Children need to feel that their world is a safe place. They need to know they’re cared for, that their needs are met, and that they can get help to work out problems. Children develop a sense of belonging when they receive these things, which improves their mental health and learning. Children who feel that they belong to their school, preschool, kindergarten or day care will be happy, more relaxed and have fewer behaviour problems than others.
