House building, Q2 2016
6 September 2016
There were 1,320 dwellings completed in Buckinghamshire in the year to Q2 2016, representing 0.6 per cent of existing stock. This was the 15th highest rate of growth among the 27 county council areas, ranking 18th among the 39 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). There were 360 completions in the quarter, an increase of 80 over the previous quarter, despite this the number of houses completed in the last year was the lowest of any four quarter period since Q4 2010. Of the four Buckinghamshire districts, only Aylesbury Vale bettered the national rate of growth for either dwellings started or completed, ranking 18th and 27th respectively among the 326 local authorities in England, with Wycombe being next highest ranked for completions at 243rd. Of all houses completed in Buckinghamshire in the last year, more than two thirds (69.7 per cent) were in Aylesbury Vale. Table 1: Dwellings completed and started in the year to Q2 2016

Source: DCLG, 2016 (live tables 100 and 253a) With 920 dwellings completed in the last year, more homes were built in Aylesbury Vale than in any of the core cities except Leeds (1,680), while more houses were built in Buckinghamshire than in all but three of the 32 London Boroughs, with only Croydon (2,040), Greenwich (1,970) and Barnet (1,760) completing more. More dwellings were started in Buckinghamshire in the last year than in any of the core cities, with Southwark (2,090) and Ealing (2,040) the only London Boroughs to start more. The 36,590 homes built in England in three months to June was the 3rd highest quarterly total since the start of 2009 but remains well below the pre-recession peak of 49,050 recorded in the last quarter of 2007. If national house building matched Aylesbury Vale’s rate, England would have built 283,765 homes in the last year. If Buckinghamshire’s rate was applied across the country that would fall to 144,383 and to 48,322 if the rate of building across Chiltern was applied.
