How the TerraCycle Brigade Programmes Work TerraCycle’s eco-friendly recycling fundraising initiatives, called Brigades, are free and open to any individual or organisation. TerraCycle and its partners cover all shipping costs and donate TerraCycle points, which can be redeemed for a monetary contribution, or towards a range of charitable gifts to a nominated charity or nonprofit organisation of the collector’s choice for the weight of each shipment returned.

How to Sign Up?

It is quick and easy to sign up! To get started go to www.terracycle.ie and click on the ‘SIGN UP’ button at the top of the page and follow the simple steps.

Which Brigade Programmes to Join?

Before signing up, potential participants should determine which materials they want to collect out of the following Irish programmes on offer www.terracycle.ie/brigades:

A participant can provide his/her

own charity (charity Tax ID number will be needed) or choose from TerraCycle’s default non-profit organisations when redeeming points on the site (minimum of 1,000 points required for redemption).

Start Collecting!

Once signed up, participants are able to begin collecting using a container of their choice. Under the resources section of your account page there is also a guide on how you can upcycle your own sturdy collection boxes.

You can also download a series of posters for the Brigades to put up around your business or organisation to let everyone know what you are collecting and TerraCycle’s ‘Collect, Store and Ship Guide’ which provides a host of useful tips.

Sending in your Collected Waste Packaging

When you’re ready to send in the collected packaging, simply log in to your account –page on the TerraCycle Web site, print one label per box and send it to TerraCycle.

TerraCycle collects thousands of units of waste a day – in order to keep track of the waste we count all the shipments received using an average weight.

We establish an average weight for each waste stream (writing instruments, oral care waste, yogurt pots, coffee wrappers etc) collected through a Brigade and weigh packages when we receive them at our warehouse. Your account will be credited based on the weight of the package sent in and weighed at TerraCycle facilities, not individually counted units.

For example the average unit weight for the McVities Biscuit Wrapper Brigade is 3.2 grams. For each 3.2g of weight within your shipment for this Brigade you earn 2 TerraCycle points. The average weight for each Brigade is listed under the FAQ section of each Brigade page. Each TerraCycle point can be redeemed for a €0.01 donation to the school, charity or non-profit organisation of your choice.

Redeeming TerraCycle Points

You can redeem your points at any time towards a variety of charitable gifts or a cash donation (cheque) to any Ireland based non-profit or charitable organisation, including schools. Please keep in mind that there is a minimum of 1,000 points or €10 needed for a cash donation. Cash donations are mailed directly to the charity, non-profit organisation or school, twice a year in June and December. All cash donations requested between 1st May and 31st October will be sent out in December. All cash donations requested between 1st November and 30th April will be sent out in June.

TerraCycle’s Brigades divert packaging waste from landfills and help raise consumer awareness about reducing, reusing and recycling. They are also a great way to earn money for charities, schools, and non-profit organisations through the collection of hard-to-recycle items. By encouraging people to rethink ‘what is waste,’ TerraCycle is making it simple for consumers to have a positive impact on the environment.
