How to clean the HP Photosmart Plus B210a Printhead (Gentle)
INTRODUCTIE If your HP B210a has a clogged printhead, this guide can potentially fix the problem and recover your printer. There are no guarantees the printer will work again, but this is one of those things that can be used to try and recover a printer you have given up on, for example. As such, it should not be assumed there is a 100% repair success rate. The success rate is very good, but it may not work (and may even damage your printer or printhead). In some cases, the damage is likely going to be beyond repair.
Guide Notes This guide is primarily made for the HP B210a (and similar 4 color models), but this guide can be used on any HP printer that uses 564 ink tanks. Warning: Later models using the HP 564 ink system likely require partial disassembly. If I have not tested the model you have, I cannot guarantee the printhead removal procedure to save the calibration will work for you. It's very likely it will, but if I do not know with 100% certainty unless I have personally been successful.

Stap 1 — Supplies needed
You will need the following supplies:
Paper towels (to keep the area clean and wipe the parts down when you are done)
Hot water (Distilled is recommended)
Plastic bag (for the ink cartridges)
Optional: Gloves and 91% alcohol (Note: Alcohol should only be used on stubborn clogs).

Stap 2 — Getting hot water
Go to a source where you can get hot water, and prepare the water for heating. Hot water is used to clean the head quickly and improve the odds of recovering the printer. Note: While water from a source like a coffee maker works, it may not be the best source. Distilled water is recommended, if possible.
If a source like a coffee maker is used, it is recommended that a filer be installed before getting water for the cleaning. It will help the quality of the water, but it still is not a good source if you have better options.

Print a image that will test the printer's heads before you start, to see how much better it turned out. Use a copy of the NTSC color bars or SMPTE color bars to get a baseline for how the printer performs before cleaning the printhead.

Stap 4 — Removing the cartridges
Remove the ink tanks from the printer, and put these aside in a plastic bag. Once the ink is removed, stop here and move to the next step on how to remove the printhead.
Stap 5 — Bypassing the "first use" initialization setup
Unplug the printer before doing ANYTHING. If you do not do this you risk losing the calibration data.
If you need clearer instructions, follow this guide for additional instructions.
With the ink cartridges removed from the printer, it is time to remove the printhead. VERIFY the printer is unplugged a second time before doing anything first.
With the power being checked twice, it is time to remove the printhead. Lift the locking latch up first. Once you do this, the printhead is ready to be removed.
Once the printhead is unlocked, lift the printhead up from the top part. You will want to handle this part from the top where the ink colors are indicated. Do not touch the contacts or nozzle once the printhead is removed. It is also ADVISED to leave the printer's scanner unit open.

Stap 6 — Cleaning the printhead
Pour some of the hot water into your bowl, and let the printhead sit. You should leave this for a little bit, to allow the water to dissolve as much ink as possible. As the water gets dark or cools dark, change the water. Once the water is reasonably clear, remove the printhead and let the printhead dry. Note: Distilled water is recommended.
As the head clears and you change water, the color of the water should get progressively lighter. If it does not do this quickly, the head is heavily clogged with ink. A small paintbrush with intact bristles may help you clear these clogs. For really hard to clean clogs, a ultrasonic cleaner may help, if you own one.
Maximum recommended water circulation times: With alcohol: ~10 minutes maximum. Without alcohol: ~15 minutes maximum.
Alcohol should only be used as a last resort. This can damage the seals on the printhead, if it isn't sufficiently purged from the printhead. To purge any alcohol used, run the head through hot water at least 3 times.

Ink System Failure error. This error does not jeopardize the calibration data, but it will persistently crash like this until the contacts are cleaned up on both the printhead and contact strip within the printer.

Stap 8 — Reinstalling the printhead and ink
Wait until the printhead is fully dry before replacing it. I recommend waiting 4-6 hours or putting the printhead in front of a fan to help speed the drying process up.
DO NOT plug the printer back in until the printhead and ink cartridges are replaced. If you get this wrong, your calibration data will be erased.
If your printer says you have a Printhead Problem, you failed to preserve the calibration data. The printhead was NOT replaced correctly. Your printer will use ~1/2 of your ink cartridges to restore the calibration stored in the printer. Note: If your inks are used and this happens, your printer will complain about the ink being used.
Once the head is wiped dry and has sat long enough to clear the water from the printhead, put the printhead back in the printer.
Reinstall the printhead. To do this, follow the procedure to remove it in reverse. Put the ink cartridges back in once this is done.
Once the printhead and ink is replaced, close the lid and plug the printer back in. Your printer will run a "printhead preparation''' procedure, which cannot be interrupted.

Stap 9 — Testing (CMYK)
Ink levels are very important for this test. Make sure your ink cartridges have a sufficient amount of ink to test the end results. If your ink is low, I would recommend buying a new set of ink to test the end result.
If you have a 5 color printer (K/PK/C/M/Y), you will need to print this test photo in a photo printing default mode. This is required because your printer has a second black that is not used in standard document modes.
You may need to run miltiple printhead cleanings to get enough ink through the chambers to restore printer functionality. Do not do this more then two to three times.
If your print quality issues still exist after 3 printhead cleaning cycles, clean the printhead a second time. If you continue having problems, it is very likely to be a faulty printhead that simply cannot be saved without buying a new printhead. At this point, it's better to buy a new printer.
After replacing the printhead, run one printhead cleaning to get ink back through the chambers of the printhead. Print the same image as you used before (use the same settings) and see if the quality has improved.
If your printer is working as well as it came out from the day you got it, you salvaged this printer completely. Anything less then perfect does not mean it's garbage, however. It just means the head has some permanent clogging, but it's good enough to put in service for basic printing. Dit document is voor het laatst gegenereerd op 2017-09-28 10:31:35 PM.
