How to clean the HP Photosmart Plus B210a Printhead (Gentle)
INTRODUCTION If your HP B210a has a clogged printhead, this guide can potentially fix the problem and recover your printer. There are no guarantees the printer will work again, but this is one of those things that can be used to try and recover a printer you have given up on, for example. As such, it should not be assumed there is a 100% repair success rate. The success rate is very good, but it may not work (and may even damage your printer or printhead). In some cases, the damage is likely going to be beyond repair.
Guide Notes This guide is primarily made for the HP B210a (and similar 4 color models), but this guide can be used on any HP printer that uses 564 ink tanks. Warning: Later models using the HP 564 ink system likely require partial disassembly. If I have not tested the model you have, I cannot guarantee the printhead removal procedure to save the calibration will work for you. It's very likely it will, but if I do not know with 100% certainty unless I have personally been successful.

Étape 1 — Gather your supplies
You will need the following supplies:
Paper towels (to keep the area clean and wipe the parts down when you are done)
Hot water (Distilled is recommended)
Plastic bag (for the ink cartridges)
Optional: Gloves and 91% alcohol (Note: Alcohol should only be used on stubborn clogs).

Étape 2 — Getting hot water
If a coffee maker is used to source hot water, a filter should be installed to make sure the water is as clean as possible (and remove the coffee pod holder on Keurigs). You want the water to be as clean as you can practically get it. Coffee maker water is not recommended if you have better options, as this water is typically not very good.
Go to a source where you can get hot water, and prepare the water for heating. Hot water is used to clean the head quickly and improve the odds of recovering the printer. Note: While water from a source like a coffee maker works, it may not be the cleanest. Boiled distilled water is recommended.
Étape 3 — Set a baseline

Print a pre cleaning test image as a baseline. It is best to use something like the following: NTSC color bars or SMPTE color bars

Étape 4 — Remove the ink tanks
If you have the original shipping caps for your cartridges, you can use these in place of a plastic bag.
Remove the ink tanks from the printer. Put these in a plastic bag to prevent the ink from drying out. Stop here and follow the next step word for word when it is time to remove the printhead.

Étape 5 — Preserving your printhead calibration
Unplug the printer before doing ANYTHING. If you do not do this you risk losing the calibration data.
If you need clearer instructions, follow this guide for additional instructions.
With the ink cartridges removed from the printer, it is time to remove the printhead. Important: Before removing the printhead, VERIFY the printer is unplugged before removing anything.
With the printer being unplugged and verified twice, remove the printhead. Lift the locking latch on the printhead carrier up. Once this is unlocked, the printhead can be removed.
Once the printhead is unlocked, remove the printhead. Remove the printhead by grabbing it as shown. Important: DO NOT touch the contacts or nozzles on the printhead. This can damage the printhead.
Leave the scanner lid open to avoid confusion about if a printhead is installed.

Étape 6 — Clean the printhead
Alcohol should only be used as a last resort. This can damage the seals on the printhead if it is not fully dried and alcohol is left to sit. The best way to do this is to purge the head when you are done THREE times without alcohol.
Maximum recommended water circulation times: With alcohol: ~10 minutes maximum. Without alcohol: ~15 minutes maximum.
As the head clears and you change water, the water will get lighter as you clean the printhead. If
this does not happen quickly, the printhead is heavily clogged. Tip: If you are having problems with a stubborn clog, a ultrasonic cleaner or small paintbrush may break these clogs down.
Pour some hot water into a bowl and let the printhead sit and cycle the water as it starts to get dark. Once you think the printhead is clean, pull the printhead from the water. Quickly wipe down the electrical contacts and printhead nozzles.
Let the printhead sit in the open for a few hours. This will allow the rest of the water on the printhead to dry, which may cause problems if reinstalled wet. Reinstall the printhead into the printer once it is dry.

Étape 7 — Clean the contacts in the printer
If this is area is not cleaned, your printer may give you a Ink System Failure error. This error does not jeopardize the calibration data if the printhead is making good electrical contact, but it is likely to crash very frequently.
To avoid Ink System Failure crashes, inspect the electrical contacts in the printer. If you find these have ink on them, wipe the contacts in the printer down with a alcohol covered napkin or eyeglass cleaner wipes. Do this BEFORE reinstalling the printhead.

Étape 8 — Reinstall the printhead and ink
DO NOT plug the printer back in until the printhead and ink cartridges are replaced. If you do not install the printhead before plugging the printer in, you will erase the calibration data.
Wait until the printhead is fully dry before replacing it. It is best to wait 4-6 hours unless you plan on putting the printhead in front of a fan to dry the printhead faster.
If your printer says Printhead Problem, you did something wrong and lost your calibration data. The common cause is incorrect printhead installation. Your printer will now need to reinitialize, which will use ~1/2 of the ink in a Retail cartridge set. Note: If you are using used ink to initialize the printer, the printer will complain.
Once you have let the printhead sit long enough to fully dry, reinstall the printhead. To do this, reverse the procedure used to remove it. Plug the printer back in at this point.
Put the ink cartridges back in once this is done. Your printer will now run a Printhead preperation step, which is unavoidable.

Étape 9 — Test the printer
Ink levels are very important for this test. Make sure your ink cartridges are at a level where capacity is not a concern. If your ink is low, the test may be impacted. Have another set of ink available just in case you need to ensure the printhead is not bad if your ink is low.
If you have a 5 color printer (K/PK/C/M/Y), you will need to print this test photo in a photo printing default mode. This is required because your printer has a second black that is not used in standard document modes.
If you have print quality problems, run a printhead cleaning to get some ink back in the system. Do not do this more then TWO times. If you continue to have problems after two cleaning cycles, the printhead is likely damaged. These tend to be ~$80, so it is often cheaper to buy a new printer.
After replacing the printhead, run a print test to see if the printer works correctly. Use the same settings as you used on the reference image and see how the printer performs after being cleaned.
If your printer is working as well as it came out from the day you got it, you salvaged this printer completely. Anything less then perfect does not mean it's garbage, however. It just means the head has some permanent clogging, but it's good enough to put in service for basic printing. Ce document a été généré pour la dernière fois le 2017-10-13 12:37:42 AM.
