Before we begin… • You do want to transform your life, right? • Brain studies show that we can only do ONE thing well at a time • If you are trying to check email, or talk to people, or look at your phone… • You won’t absorb this information • It will all be wasted • And you’ll think “I tried that and it didn’t work” • When in reality you didn’t try it at all!

Important! Important! • You must have pen and paper in front of you • Shut off email • Shut off your stupid phone or Blackberry or iPhone

An Amazing Study • In a pioneering study, Dr. Libet discovered that when you move your hand, let’s say, the thought to move your hand appears 1/3rd of a second before you are aware of it • This has been verified again and again

• The normal picture we have of our minds is the “little man” or “little woman” inside, thinking of stuff • But this isn’t accurate at all • And that picture hurts our chances of success

• Thoughts are made through chemical processes in various parts of the brain • Sometimes thoughts appear to our conscious minds • Thoughts are generated first • They only appear once in awhile • Normally they are there but do not appear

• There is a part of the brain that inhibits us from acting on thoughts • We are constantly having thoughts that distract us • Normally these thoughts are about ourselves and our problems • They appear over, and over, and over, when we get distracted

The effect of not inhibiting distractions • We switch our focus and this takes a lot of energy • We try to multi task and end up doing several things very poorly • We don’t remember what we were doing • We lose confidence in our ability to focus and get stuff done

The cure: how to get back your ability to get stuff done • We can improve our ability to focus on goals by practicing inhibition • We notice distractions • Then we quietly put them aside • Continue to focus without recriminations or guilty feelings • That’s what we’re going to do now. We begin focusing now.

Summarizing… • Our brains create thoughts by themselves. Thoughts appear all the time • We have to focus on a single train of thought to get stuff done • When we are distracted we begin thinking “tape recorder thoughts” about ourselves • There is an inhibition part of the brain that can notice and “kill” distractions • We get stuff done and don’t worry so much about ourselves and our shortcomings

We are going to talk science and experience • Science points to what works • Experience is invaluable because some things make sense, you know they’re true, but we can’t wait for science to prove it

I gave some folks a survey to take before this class • getting my business up and running • Getting and staying motivated to do the things necessary to move forward in my business without being sidetracked by other opportunities. • Over weight • Organization • Fear of failure • Return to the motivating go getter I once was. • Debt/credit • Breaking out of a procrastination

Here’s a good one •

The one where I am either easily stopped or stop myself from taking the final needed steps. Sometimes this has saved me from making an error but it also prevents me from succeeding. I am great at persisting in researching and trying and applying health solutions. I stink at sales and making money. Although I would have actually easily done things like subject to had I the income to ensure I could cover the mtg should the home be empty; I don't want to risk other people's wellbeing that way. I want to be able to produce cash flow where needed, when needed, in sufficient quantity. Also to help teach those of my kids who need it. I am eating better. I only decided to lose weight recently, so I have little experience there. But hey it can't hurt to learn

Is this you? • I started a business and the motivation problem I face is doing the things that will get results. I find myself doing less priority work first in order to avoid what must be done. The truth is I’m scared and worried about receiving negative criticism. I know that one No is closer to a YES, but I can’t seem to have the guts to move forward. When I was working for companies I just did what I had to do, but for my own business I have a problem. I keep finding excuses and put off what I need to do. The other problem with motivation is maintaining the momentum especially during difficult times. And for a solo entrepreneur every day is challenging. What can we do to push forward and get real result – big $$$ days • How to decide on a niche and get past the fear of the technical aspects of setting up a website • Not procrastinating, starting my own successful business, going to bed earlier and getting up

What we want to do Demolish the myths about getting motivated Show you WHY you have failed in the psat Show you why it’s NOT your fault Show you HOW to get motivated starting right now Make it easy Make it effortless Make it a joy so you’ll continue and develop a new habit • Make it CERTAIN that you are doing the right thing so you will persevere even when you don’t feel like it

• • • • • • •

Here’s what we’ll do • You’ll be busy doing some very important exercises • Don’t worry, nobody but you will see what you’ve written so be honest as you can • There will be homework and we will be sending my mom to your house to make sure you’ve done it

Take This Quick Quiz • Right now, with paper in front of you • Answer these questions one by one that I will ask you • They are all things that may or may not help you with your goals • Write down the question number as I show you each question • And write yes or no next to the number • Yes this will help me reach my goals, or • No, this will not help me reach my goals • Ready?

QUESTION 1 – MAKE A STEP BY STEP PLAN

QUESTION 2 – GET MOTIVATED BY FOCUSING ON A CELEB OR SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE

QUESTION 3 – TELL FRIENDS, FAMILY AND OTHERS ABOUT YOUR GOAL

QUESTION 4 – VISUALIZE BAD THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU DON’T REACH YOUR GOAL

QUESTION 5 – VISUALIZE GOOD THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL

QUESTION 6 – SUPPRESS NEGATIVE THOUGHTS, (LIKE ABOUT DRINKING OR SMOKING OR STARTING A BUSINESS…)

QUESTION 7 – GIVE YOURSELF LITTLE REWARDS AS YOU PROGRESS

QUESTION 8 – RELY UPON YOUR WILLPOWER

QUESTION 9 – RECORD YOUR PROGRESS IN A JOURNAL, CHART OR SPREADSHEET

QUESTION 10 – VISUALIZE HOW GREAT YOUR LIFE WILL BE WHEN YOU HAVE REACHED YOUR GOAL

So let’s look at the truth about positive thinking and what helps us reach our goals, shall we?

“Positive thinking” methods • • • • •

Visualizing success Repeating mantras and phrases every day Reading positive things Watching inspiring movies Spending time with positive people

A note on why I hate positive thinking in particular • It’s telling yourself lies • Your mind knows better • This doesn’t work because you know if you need to say it all the time, it isn’t true! • There are actually easy ways to fool the mind that do work to get you to successful outcomes

Visualizing success • • • • • •

Pham and Taylor University of California study Students visualized getting good grades How they would feel What it would be like Also noted how much they studied Results were extraordinary

Extraordinary results • Students who visualized got lower grades • Studied less • Did far worse than the “control group” of similar students who did not visualize doing really well on their exams

Another visualization study • Oettingen and Wadden, University of Pennsylvania • Study of obese women trying to lose weight • Women spent time visualizing how they’d deal with scenarios • Going to a friend’s house and being offered pizza • Again, results were amazing

Extraordinary results • Women who had positive visualizations lost 26 pounds LESS weight than those with negative visualizations • Same results again and again • Those visualizing positive outcomes had LESS success getting jobs, landing a boyfriend or girlfriend, making money, etc.

Yet the “positive thinking” industry continues to churn out the same garbage.

Visualizing positive outcomes damages your motivation Nobody knows why But study after study bears this out And my own research does as well 63% of you have read self help books preaching “positive thinking” • Most everyone says it hasn’t helped them make permanent changes • • • •

What if positive thinking books, tapes and courses are the REASON you haven’t been motivated?

But there are things that work • There are very clear scientifically proven methods to get motivated • They are easy to do • They are simple to do • And it doesn’t take much motivation to do them

How to find out what works • • • •

Study people who are meeting their goals Study people who are motivated What do they do differently from others? What is it that they do that is responsible for their success in motivation and in working towards goals?

Here is an amazing study Large scale, lots of folks Make goals and were tracked for a year How many reached their goals? 10% reported they had done so The ten questions I just asked were the ten most common techniques that ALL study participants used • But what methods did the 10% use? • • • • •

• Look at the ODD numbers on your questino • Those ODD numbered techniques WORKED • Those EVEN numbered techniques did NOT work

Success Rule #1: Form a plan

• • • •

ZigZiglar’s arrow story Form a goal Break it down into steps Make each concrete, measurable and time based

An example from my own life • Matt Furey Internet Marketing event • I was inspired • Sat and wrote out specific concrete and measurable goals • Broke down what it would take to achieve each one • Met every goal spot on through the rest of the year

What I used to do • Write down my goals. I was told you have to write them down • Visualize them • Meditate on them • Fail to reach them

Now I do something much much better • • • • •

It really works It’s easy to do You can do it right now It is blindingly obvious Yet almost nobody does it

Success Rule #2: Tell friends, family and the world about your goal

Debt and credit cards • Many folks carry around large amounts of debt • Schoolteacher owes $100,000 • Psychologist owes $300,000 • Ultrasound technician owes $45,000 • I could go on and on

Successful strategies • Create a plan • Tell the world about it • There are all these blogs about “how I am getting myself out of debt” • They WORK • Telling friends, family and the world COMMITS the brain, the mind, to the plan

Why does this work? • Telling friends, family and the world commits the mind • Our brains are wired a certain way • A powerful organ exists in the brain that seeks to “be right” • We want to “be right” when we tell others we will lose weight, start a successful business, cut down on our drinking… • That part of the brain goes to work for us to reach our goal

But a caution! • I’ve studied entrepreneurship and started up numerous companies • Dissipating your energies • Brand new, tiny idea type projects get KILLED when you tell others about them

Tell a small group about your startup idea • For tiny idea type projects, work with them with a very small group of people first • Don’t do it alone • A key is to have others involved from the onset • I’ll have more to say on this later • The idea of telling others is so powerful

Success Rule #3: Think of the good that will happen

See, there is visualization involved here! • Successful people reflect on what good will come when they reach their goal • I am on a low carb diet now • I think of how I will look and how it will benefit me

A bad method… • Think about how you will continually be unhappy if you don’t lose weight • Dwell on how it is likely that the current state will be permanent • Or how you won’t reach your goal at all • This removes motivation

Success Rule #4: Little rewards as you progress

Big goals become little goals and those should lead to a reward • Not a binge • A small reward that doesn’t conflict with your big goal • With my “Matt Furey event” goal I was able to write myself larger and larger salary checks • It is essential that you plan small rewards as you progress to meeting your goal • My low carb diet rewards could be treating myself to a book, or mini vacation, that I wouldn’t otherwise take

Success Rule #5: Journal and chart your progress in writing

• In my Matt Furey example I tracked my advertising, my sales, and my paycheck • In my low carb example, I use a meal diary • I chart “inches” off my waist • Chart progress not just results • A journal works as well • Where you are at, your EFFORTS • And where you are at, your RESULTS

What kind of written journal or chart? • • • • •

Handwritten is good Computer Use Google Docs or MS Word or MS Excel Draw it if you are good at drawing But do it in writing and EVERY DAY

Now here is what you need to do • Pick one subject or topic that is your goal • Just a few words • Examples are start my business, lose weight, drink less… • Do it now • Write it down • I’ll wait…

Now write down five steps to reaching that goal • • • •

No more than five steps Make each step easy to measure Realistic Time-based

Examples for my low carb diet • My goal is to lose 2 inches on my waistline • My steps are as follows

My steps to losing inches on my waistline 1. Cut out all starchy vegetables, all grains starting right now 2. Tell Naomi, my kids, my friends what I am doing, right now 3. Make it through the “feel horrible” stage which takes about two weeks 4. When I reach my desired waist, introduce root vegetables 5. Cheat once per week at that time

My steps if I was starting a business 1. Go through Richard’s training materials within two weeks 2. Print business cards and attend one networking event for four weeks in a row after that. Speak to at least 5 people at each event 3. Follow up on all leads within 72 hours of getting them 4. Submit deals within 48 hours of getting them

So now it’s your turn again • • • • • •

My first step is …. I believe I can achieve this step because… To achieve this step I will… I will do it by this date … I will tell _______ about it right away I will reward myself once I achieve it by …

Do this right now • • • • • •

Don’t wait This call will be over You can then fill this out And make sure the first step is a “do it now” step You can start this RIGHT NOW We’ll go over your plan on our next call (but you won’t be showing it to anyone unless you want to)
