Huandoy Sur, Attempt on South Face and Second Ascent of West Ridge. Our expedition was composed of Gerardo Watzl, leader, his wife Jacqueline, A ldo Sánchez, Eduardo Vivaldi, Altamira, Carlos Perri, J. Corradi, Rafael Suárez and me. We set up Base Camp on July 15 below the south face of Huandoy Sur at 16,400 feet. Shortly after we had started on the wall, a rock fell on the leg of my companion, Altamira. I had climbed about 150 feet up a crack right in the middle of the great face when the accident happened. I returned the next day with Rafel Sánchez and we repeated the American route of 1964 ( A.A.J., 1965, 14:2, p. 268), which we did in two days, up and down, reaching the summit (20,210 feet) on July 28. We found bits of rope on the upper part. Our bivouac was at 19,600 feet and the weather was a disaster; we could see nothing and touched the summit like blind men.
