Humility Helps Us Achieve Unity Philippians 2:1-11
In our societies today, fortune favors the strong; modesty is often seen as a weakness. It is the “survival of the fittest” — and for that reason, meekness is often underappreciated. But, the secret to success lie in the ability to express humility. The emphasis on humility in philosophy and religious texts shows that it’s a trait and principle that deserves to be revered. As Confucius once defined it, humility is “the solid foundation of all virtues” — and the key to achievement. We all need this! Humble people are powerful and we can all stand to emulate them. A big part of humility is knowing our own limits, strengths / weaknesses, morally or otherwise.” Some of the traits humble people have are: • • • • •
They focus their energy on others. They’re conscientious - act on their compassion Their moral compass guides their decision-making. They see happiness as a journey - feel fulfilled on a regular basis They have strong relationships.
Paul is reminding everyone to listen and be ready to follow Jesus as a servant who humbles one self. Paul wants us to offer - "Encouragement" - "lifting of another's spirits." Offer "Comfort" be in "Fellowship" - "sharing," Have Compassion and show "Tenderness" Paul is calling everyone to the same attitude of mind, humility, and way of thinking about life and others, selflessness, love, spirit and purpose and avoid selfishness. "Consider others better than yourselves." Christ is Our Example of Selfless Humility (2:5-11) - Christ's humility is based on love for the Father. Your humility should be based on Christ. Christ emptied Himself "Made himself nothing"; Was obedient to death and was exalted to the Highest place! In our Humility - Let us be ready to provide, wash others feet, feed the hungry, visit the lowly, forgive one another, fellowship and comfort one another, Be humble and do your part. The Rev.
