Nearly 30 years after the Chernobyl disaster, the uninhabited Exclusion Zone that extends 19 miles in all directions from the plant has returned to pristine forest. Animal populations have also bounced back but contain high levels of radiation. Ukraine opened this area to tourists in 2011.

Protesters still gather daily in Syntagma Square in Athens and unemployment recently topped 27 percent, but Greece is showing signs of stability. Its tourism sector, long an economic driver for the country, is expected to draw some 17 million visitors this year, up 1.5 million from last year. Many hotels and restaurants are offering discounts to lure back tourists, and now is a great time to visit. Start with a couple of days in Greece’s storied capital and a stay at the neoclassical King George Palace, where guests who book three nights get a fourth night on the house. The hotel boasts views of the Acropolis (and the gleaming, modern Acropolis Museum) as well as Tudor Hall, a killer French-Mediterranean restaurant. Speaking of food, the city’s chefs have fallen back in love with regional fare in recent years, with hot spots such as Spondi, Alatsi and Funky Gourmet remixing meze-style dining for today’s palates. For a glimpse of contemporary Athens, head to the hip, centrally located Gazi arts district, where eats mingle with beats in a repurposed gasworks.
