Growstone Hydroponic Growth Mediums and Super Soil Aerators are a horticultural, scientific and environmental win-win-win. Growstones are an effective alternative to perlite and Hydroton®. They guarantee a considerably higher aeration and faster drainage than perlite, while simultaneously holding more water than Hydroton.

Growstones provide:

3 times more water than Hydroton® Over 70% more aeration than perlite 4 times more aeration than coco coir

The perfect balance of air and water

Growstones highly porous media associate a good water holding capacity to high air-filled porosity. At field capacity, Growstones hold 30% water within its pores and 50% air by volume within its inner and inter aggregate spaces. This water to air ratio maximizes water availability and aeration to your plant roots. It also facilitates drainage making it impossible to over irrigate.

Average Water Holding Capacity Air Filled Porosity of Substrates After Drainage

Other Growstones characteristics are:

High porosity and aeration Proven yields ‘as-good-as’ the industry standards Can satisfy a wide range of plant requirements for different growing systems and climates Made from 100% recycled glass Not strip-mined like Hydroton® and perlite Inert pH neutral after preparation 100% non-toxic and chemical free Lightweight, dust-free Impossible to over water Does not float to top when irrigated Non-degradable Non-compacting Reusable Made in the USA

“What growers like about Growstones are they hold a lot of oxygen and moisture. And the fact they are recycled makes them even better.”

“Our Rocks Don’t Roll” —Andrew Founder & Inventor of Growstone Santa Fe, New Mexico

How to Use Growstones Growstones are easy to use, and easy to handle. They can be used alone or blended with coco coir or sphagnum peat to increase aeration and drainage of your potting mix. In fact, the synergies between porous Growstones and wet coco or peat are enormous. They are also a perfect medium for all hydroponic systems, as well as in-soil or container gardening.

Propagation

Place your seeds in any propagation media. Once roots start to show through base of propagation plug, seedlings are ready for transplant.

Transplant

For transplanting into all hydroponic systems: ww

Preparation

Being made from recycled glass, Growstones have an initial high pH. Preparation prior to use requires time in contact with water to lower and stabilize the solution pH. Instructions For first time use, open the bag at the top and poke small holes at the bottom. Insert a water hose and let drain for a few minutes. Place the wet Growstones in a large container and fill with tap water until covered. Let soak for about a day. Discard the soak water and rinse thoroughly. For best results soak again overnight. Discard water in the garden. Now your Growstones are ready to use.

Irrigation and Maintenance

Irrigate as needed to maintain moisture about 1” from surface. Fertilize as recommended by your nutrient provider. In hydroponic systems, it is recommended to maintain pH of nutrient solution between 5.5 and 6.5. Replenish nutrient solution weekly and replace at least once a month to retain freshness.

Reuse and Disposal

Growstones can be reused. Simply give a vigorous shake to free roots attached to Growstones and rinse. For crops with strong root systems, some roots will not come free. If this occurs, replenish with new Growstones. As with any other substrates, sterilization between crops is recommended.

1

Prepare Growstones as mentioned in ‘Preparation’.

2

Be sure hydroponic container is clean.

3

Fill container halfway with wet Growstones.

4

Carefully loosen and remove seedlings from propagation plug.

5

Place seedlings on top of Growstones.

6

Fill remaining volume with Growstones around propagation plug.

7

Gently press the seedlings down to ensure good contact between roots and growing media. Irrigate immediately after.

Alternative Method

Fill container to top and use trowel to insert seedling plugs. If blending with coco coir or peat, ensure root crown is at the same level as top of growing media to avoid excess moisture and potential root diseases.

Products Hydroponic Growing Media: Volume: 1.25 FT3 (35.4 liters)

When finished with your Growstones after several crops, don’t dispose of them, reuse them! Add your used Growstone in your outdoor garden, raised bed, lawn or container as a soil amendment to improve texture and structure of heavy soils, or the water holding capacity and aeration of sandy soils.

Super Soil Aerator: Volume: 1 FT3 (28.3 liters) and 2 FT3 (56.6 liters)

Growstones are a horticultural and environmental win-win. They start out as discarded glass in a landfill. We crush the waste glass, mill it to a fine powder, and turn them into Growstones in our ecofriendly manufacturing process. No water is used. No strip-mining like perlite and Hydroton®. No long distance shipping. And the best part, Growstones are made right here in the USA.

Deep Water Culture Simple, inexpensive deep water systems are highly productive when used with Growstones. These systems are ideal for aromatic herbs like basil, mint, thyme, cilantro, parsley, or micro greens and lettuce. They produce abundant and healthy plants due to maximized moisture and oxygen in the root zone.
