CONGRATULATIONS! Your store is LEED™ certified.

What does that mean? LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED certification criteria are created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and include a framework of best practices for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. This includes practices like using less energy and water, in addition to improving indoor air quality.

LEEDing your team •

Be sure all Associates on your team receive the “A Greener Tomorrow Starts with You” brochure to learn more about the simple ways you can be “green” at work and at home!

Check KNet’s “Today’s News” at a later date for more information regarding Huddle Topics.

Incorporate LEED certification topics into your daily Huddle discussions and review the LEED break room poster.

A new LEED plaque will be installed at customer service and will include brochures for customers who are interested in learning more about how your store is “LEEDing the way.”

LEEDING THE WAY

This store is LEED™ certified. To be LEED certified, a building must meet specific criteria produced by the U.S. Green Building Council, the leader in best practices for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

What makes your store LEED™ certified? Green Power 100% of power supplied is generated by a renewable energy source.

Air Quality Increased fresh air ventilation, carbon dioxide monitoring and strict no-smoking policies within 25 feet of the building's entrance.

Water Efficiency Water conserving plumbing fixtures reduce water consumption by more than 30%. In addition, this store uses a smart irrigation controller to reduce water irrigation use over 50%.

Green Housekeeping All restroom paper products are made of 100% recycled materials. In addition, green housekeeping methods and products are used to keep this store clean.

Join us in our commitment to the environment by focusing on being green not only at work, but in your daily life too.

Kohl’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future

A GREENER TOMORROW STARTS WITH YOU

Since 2008, all newly constructed Kohl’s stores are built using LEED criteria in three categories: New Construction, Commercial Interiors and Existing Buildings. Since then, we have built over 490 LEED certified stores that incorporate sustainable features like solar panels to provide renewable energy. It’s not just our stores that are LEED certified—non-retail locations like the Photo Studio, San Antonio Call Center and New York Design Office are certified, too. We are committed to conserving and protecting our planet, because we know that a better, brighter and greener future starts with us.

BE GREEN You can lend the environment a helping hand by focusing on being green at work, at home, out and about or on the road. Here are some of the small ways you can make a BIG difference in your daily life:

WORK

HOME Recycle

Recycle

Recycle aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard and newspapers to reduce your home’s carbon emissions by 850 pounds per year.

Recycle a large variety of items, including cardboard, plastic hangers, fixtures, paper/graphics, damaged merchandise and pallets.

Reduce Carbon Emissions

OUT & ABOUT Recycle Bring your plastic bags to any Kohl’s location to be recycled.

PC: Leanne/Michelle D: Morgan PD: Julie CW: Joy

Keep your water heater temperature at 120°F to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 550 pounds a year. If your water heater is more than five years old, wrap it in an insulated jacket to reduce carbon emissions up to 1,000 pounds per year!

Remember: The only items that should go in the trash are food waste and Styrofoam.

Clean Green Use only those cleaning products which Kohl’s has approved for cleaning our environmentally friendly stores.

Conserve Energy

Shop Sustainably

Use Energy Efficiently

When you are shopping, bring your own reusable shopping bags.

Replace incandescent bulbs with efficient LED bulbs (they last up to 10x longer!).

Reduce Carbon Emissions

Garden Green

Keep your car tuned and tires properly inflated in order to save on fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions.

Water your lawn and plants in the early morning when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.

Kohl’s centrally controls the lights and temperature at every store for optimal energy use. If your store feels uncomfortable, report it to the Service Channel or call the Facilities Resource Center at 866-907-0048.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO

LEED? Reflective, Energy Star-rated roofing material decreases energy demands for cooling.

Bike racks and maintenance facilities promote alternative modes of transportation.

Drip lines reduce irrigation water consumption by more than 50%.

Low-flow aerators on restroom faucets help conserve water.

Sustainable Building Materials

Waste Reduction

Low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) materials such as wall coverings, carpet and ceiling tiles are used to complete the building’s interior, while building materials that contain post- and pre-consumer recycled content are selected for construction.

All of the waste generated by construction is carefully managed to ensure the least possible amount of debris is sent to landfills and incinerators, reducing landfill waste by an estimated 50–75%.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED™, is an internationally recognized green building certification system achieved by meeting a specific set of criteria produced by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The LEED criteria provide a concise framework of best practices for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

How Kohl’s is LEEDing the Way Over 1,000 ENERGY STAR labeled stores

ENERGY STAR Partner of the

Year since 2010 Over 490 LEED certified locations

More than 40 million sq. ft. of LEED certified space

Heat Island Effect Reflective roofing material reduces “heat island effect,” which occurs when air and surface temperatures rise, creating increased energy demands in areas with asphalt and other hard-surface infrastructure.

Energy Efficient Equipment This store has been LEED certified in Commercial Interiors.

ENERGY STAR labeled equipment and appliances, like refrigerators, copy machines, TVs and computers, are used to help reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Water Efficiency Water-conserving plumbing fixtures reduce water consumption by more than 30% and smart irrigation controllers lower water irrigation use over 50%.

Energy Efficiency Building commissioning ensures all the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are operating properly in conjunction with the insulation, building ventilation, lighting, heating and cooling to maximize the building’s energy efficiency.
