FINAL 2014-15 GLVC STANDINGS

OPENING TIP The 2015-16 season tips off for the Greyhounds with a pair of exhibition games against NCAA Division I foes. On Friday night, the Greyhounds make the short drive to Terre Haute, Ind. for a meeting with Indiana State University. Less than 24 hours later, the Greyhounds will face the Illinois Fighting Illini in their final tune up before the regular season. ABOUT THE SYCAMORES The Sycamores are guided by second year head coach Joey Wells, who led Indiana State to a 17-13 record in his debut season. The Sycamores were impressive in nonconference play, finishing 10-1 against out of conference opponents, including a 6561 OT win over in-state foe Indiana on Nov. 30. ISU finished 7-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play, grabbing the six-seed for the conference tournament where they fell to o. 3 seed Missouri State, 75-57. Indiana State welcomes eight letter winners back from the 2014-15 club but will feature an entirely new starting five on opening night. Seniors Alexis Newbolt and Cierra Ceazer, juniors Joyea Marshall, Kelsey Dirks and Rhagen Smith all saw important minutes for the Sycamores last season. Freja Christensen, Kalliste Haskins and Marian Shekih are also back after seeing limited playing time a year ago. The Sycamores shot 37.4% as a team last year and averaged 61.5 points per game. Defensively, Indiana State surrendered 59.9 points per game, holding 13 teams under the 60-point mark last season. GREYHOUNDS VERSUS SYCAMORES The two teams have not met in the regular season, but have met in exhibition play in each of the last two seasons. UIndy held with the Sycamores in their meeting on Dec. 7, 2014 before Indiana State pulled away in the second half to earn a 62-43 win. Kelly Walter led the Greyhounds with 22 points, but UIndy was done in by 34 turnovers in defeat. ABOUT THE FIGHTING ILLINI The Fighting Illini are coming off a 15-15 campaign in 2014-15, including a 6-12 record in the Big Ten. Now in his fourth year at the helm, head coach Matt Bollant returns two starters and five other returners from last year’s team. Bollant is in his 13th year as a college head coach, making stops at Bryan College and Wisconsin Green Bay before being named the bench boss at Illinois prior to the 2012-13 season.

2015-16 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GREYHOUND NOTES

BACK IN ACTION The Greyhounds welcome back nine members from last year’s squad, featuring six letter winners and three starters. Senior Princess German topped the Greyhounds with 17.9 points per game last season on 43.8% shooting while knocking down 70.1% of her free throw chances on her way to a Second Team All-GLVC selection. Junior Nicole Anderson is coming off a solid debut season in the crimson and grey in which she averaged 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. The transfer from Miami (Ohio) connected on a team-leading 54.4% of her field goal attempts and finished with four double-doubles on her way to earning a Second Team All-GLVC nomination. Sophomore Sarah Costello is expected to reclaim her position as the team’s point guard after making 25 starts as a freshman. The Downers Grove, Ill.-native averaged 7.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and a team-leading 2.8 assists per contest. Also back in the fold this year are letter winners Ashley Montanez (28 gp, 17 minutes per game), Devin Ferguson (28 gp,17.7 minutes per game) and Marlena Muszak (16 gp, 4.4 minutes per game). Mariah Weddle, Tina Negoescu and Emily Thomas are also back after seeing limited minutes in 2014-15. NEW SEASON, NEW FACES Head coach Constantin Popa welcomes four new members to the Greyhounds this year, all of whom will have a chance to compete for playing time right away. The most experienced member of this year’s recruiting class is senior forward Darion Hutchinson, who is very familiar with the Greyhounds after spending the last three years as a member of GLVC rival Bellarmine University. As a sophomore, Hutchinson’s 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game were both tops for the Knights. The Greyhounds added another post presence in junior Nariman Jaber, who comes to the University of Indianapolis following a two-year stint at Moraine Valley Community College where she finished as the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 265. As a sophomore, Jaber led all Division II junior college players in rejections per contest, swatting an average of 4.3 shots per game. Additionally, Jaber chipped in with 11.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest. The Hounds added another member to their backcourt with the transfer Catherine Barnett from Lindenwood Belleville. Barnett chipped in with six points, three rebounds and one steal per contest last year for the Lynx. The final addition to the Greyhounds is the team’s lone freshman in guard Jordan Cole, who joins the UIndy program after finishing up her prep career at Munster High School in Munster, Ind. During her four years there, she was named to the Northwest Crossroads Conference First Team twice and earned a spot on the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Top 100 as a junior. STACKING UP AGAINST THE COMPETITION Coming off a 12-16 season, inclduing an 8-10 mark in GLVC play, and a trip to the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament where they would fall to eventual champion Drury, the Greyhouds have been picked to finish fifth in the GLVC East Division in 2015-16. Sitting at the top of the polls in the GLVC are a pair of nationally ranked teams and NCAA Regional qualifiers from one year ago. Lewis has been picked to finish at the top of the East Division following a 31-3 season, while Drury was a unanimous decision to pace the West Division. In total, the Gryehounds will square off against seven teams that qualified for NCAA Regional Tournament play last year.

2015-16 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH CONSTANTIN POPA (5TH SEASON)

seeded Drury in the quarterfinals.

Constantin Popa (pronounced CON-stan-teen POH-puh) will be aiming to get the Greyhounds back to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in the last five years, following the program’s first national tournament abscense since 201011, the year before Popa was named Greyhounds’ head coach.

Believed to be the tallest coach in NCAA history, the 7-foot-3 Popa spent four seasons as the top assistant on the Greyhound bench before being promoted to the “big chair.” In his time as an assistant, the Hounds won 89 games and tied a program record by garnering three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, including a “Sweet 16” appearance in 2009.

The Greyhound bench boss guided UIndy to a 12-16 record in 2014-15. The Hounds qualified for the GLVC Tournament, earning a 72-51 win in the opening round on the road against Truman State University before falling to top-

In 2009-10, Popa’s third season as UIndy assistant, the Greyhounds posted a 26-4 record and fi nished the regular season atop the GLVC East Division. The Hounds also put together a school-record 24-game win streak that year, on the way to receiving the highest ranking in program history -- No. 2 in the USA TODAY ESPN Division II Coaches Poll.

Popa guided three Greyhounds to Second Team All-GLVC selections in Princess German, Kelly Walter and Nicole Anderson, with Walter setting the single-season program record for three-point field goals after knocking down 80 in 2014-15. In 2013-14, Popa guided the Hounds to a 23-9 (13-5 GLVC) mark in earning the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Regional Tournament. The ‘13-14 team set program records for single-season points (2,488) and threepoint field goals (248), and ranked in the top five in scoring (77.8 pts/ gm), field goals (852), free throws (536),field goal pct. (.473), free throw pct. (.776) and blocks (161). Popa’s teams sit as the top three in single-season blocks, with the 201213 squad holding the record at 181. He coached two All-GLVC selections in Katy McIntosh (first team) and Eliza Wortman (second team, all-defensive team) last season. McIntosh finished her Greyhound career seventh on the all-time scoring list (1,495). Wortman leaves UIndy with the second-most career blocks (142).

All told, UIndy has made six NCAA appearances in the seven seasons with Popa on the bench.

Popa mentored 2010 GLVC Player of the Year and All-American Samantha Meissel, as well as all-conference forward Katie Lyons. The pair represents the only two UIndy women to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor in each of their four years on campus. Before joining the Greyhound staff in 2007, Popa spent two years as the varsity girls’ head coach at Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Fla.
