INDIVIDUAL NOTES Senior inside receiver Dwayne Harris, the East Carolina career leader in receptions (260) and receiving yards (2,933), made 10 catches for 57 yards. He has caught at least one pass in 43-straight games, the second-longest streak at the FBS level - trailing only Colorado’s Scotty McKnight (48). Harris also has two or more receptions in 36 consecutive contests. He entered the game ranked seventh among all FBS players this season in receptions per game (7.5). Harris brought his totals to 93 receptions and 1,055 receiving yards this season, both the most in a year in ECU history. Aundrae Allison (2005) is the only other Pirate receiver to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season. Harris tallied 202 all-purpose yards, giving him 1,424 in this season’s C-USA games (178.0 APY/G). He entered the game standing eighth at the FBS level, averaging 168.2 all-purpose yards per game. Harris’ season-high 129 kickoff return yards moved him past Broderick Clark (Louisville/2,111/2002-04) and into eighth on the Conference USA all-time list. Harris has 2,235 kickoff return yards and is also seventh on the C-USA kickoff return list with 95. Junior quarterback Dominique Davis accounted for three of the team’s five offensive touchdowns today. This season, he has accounted for 45 of the team’s 58 offensive TDs. He entered the day leading all FBS players in points per game accounted for (23.1). Davis’ FBS-leading two touchdown passes give him 36 this season, an ECU single-season record and tied for the sixth most in a year by a Conference USA quarterback. His 45 touchdowns responsible for leave him three short of entering the C-USA single-season top-five list. Davis completed 30 or more passes (33) for the third time in the last five games and 25 or more for the ninth time this season. He entered the contest leading all FBS quarterbacks in completions per game (29.5). Davis’ 45 attempts and 33 completions today give him 552 and 358, respectively, this season. Those totals are ECU single-season records and the second-most attempts and third-most completions by a C-USA quarterback in a year. o Davis also has already set the ECU single-season record for passing yards (3,699). Davis’ fourth-quarter touchdown run was his ninth of the season, the most for a Pirate quarterback since Leander Green’s QB-record 12 in 1979. Senior running back Jonathan Williams recorded his fourth and fifth total touchdowns in the last three games with his pair of first-quarter two-yard rushing scores. o Williams became the first ECU player to rush for two touchdowns in a quarter since Dominique Lindsay had two against Boise State in the second quarter of the 2007 Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl. Junior inside receiver Lance Lewis’ fourth-quarter 16 and seven-yard touchdown receptions extended his ECU single-season record to 13 TD grabs. He has scored at least once in eight of the last nine games. Lewis hauled in eight balls for a career-high 154 yards to bring his totals to 78 and 979 this season, the fifth most and third most, respectively, in a year in program history. o With the 154 receiving yards, Lewis has passed the 100-yard threshold in three of the last four games. Junior kicker Michael Barbour’s streak of 12-straight field goal conversions was snapped at end of the second quarter, when he missed wide left from 50 yards away. Barbour made a 33-yard try in the third quarter to start a new string. Barbour also made five point-after attempts, giving him a single-season record 54, surpassing Ben Hartman’s 50 in 2007. Barbour also has 96 points (14 FGs, 54 PAT) this year, setting a single-season record for points by a kicker, surpassing Hartman’s 94 (20 FGs, 34 PAT) points in 2009. Senior defensive lineman Josh Smith recorded a career-best 3.5 tackles for a loss, giving him 8.0 TFLs in the last four games. Senior linebacker Dustin Lineback tied a career high with 14 tackles, including 11 in the opening half. Freshman defensive end Matt Milner recovered a fumble in his second-straight game by scooping up an SMU loose ball in the first quarter. Milner also forced the first fumble of his career on SMU’s first offensive play of the third quarter. Milner recorded his third sack of the season, tying him for the team lead, and his first since the Southern Miss game. Junior Emanuel Davis forced the first-quarter Mustang fumble and has caused one fumble in his only two contests against SMU. WITH THE LOSS With the loss, ECU has … o Won 10 of the last 17 games, but has lost four of the last five o Has won 10 of the last 13 (and 17 of 22) Conference USA games o Had its 10-game Conference USA home winning streak snapped o Has won eight of the last 12 games against C-USA West Division members o Has won five of the last seven home games against C-USA West Division members ECU falls to 6-6 overall. It is the first time since 2005 (5-6) the Pirates have not finished the regular season with an above .500 record. East Carolina can post its fifth-straight winning season with a bowl-game victory. ECU finishes the C-USA season with a 5-3 record for the second time (2006) in the last four years. SMU evened the series with East Carolina at 2-2 and won for the first time in Greenville after falling 38-21 in 2006. The Pirates fall to 32-20 in Conference USA home games, including an 18-6 mark since divisional play was implemented in 2005.
TEAM NOTES The loss snapped the Pirates’ home Conference USA winning streak at 10 games. It was the program’s longest home C-USA winning streak, and the longest for ECU in home conference play since winning 11 straight over Southern Conference foes from 1971-75. o In addition to the Pirates, only two other programs in Conference USA history have had a home, league winning streak of 10 or more games (13 – Houston/2005-10; 12 – Southern Miss/1996-2000) With the loss, ECU is now 6-5 all time in overtime contests. East Carolina scored five offensive touchdowns today, extending its school record to 58 offensive TDs. The previous best was 50 offensive touchdowns by the 2007 team. o The Pirates’ 60 overall touchdowns this season are also the program record, surpassing the 2007 squad’s 52 touchdowns. ECU scored a program-record 346 points in C-USA games this season. The previous best was 259 by the 2007 team. o The Pirates are averaging 43.3 points per C-USA game this season after averaging 31.8 points per league tilt in 2009. Overall this year, East Carolina has scored a school-record 458 points. With its 38 points today, ECU reached the 35-point plateau in all eight C-USA games this season. The Pirates took a 7-0 lead, snapping a four-game streak in which the opponent had scored first. o The opening drive of 97 yards was ECU’s longest scoring drive of the season. Dominique Davis’ fourth-quarter touchdown pass extended ECU’s streak to 14-straight games with a scoring pass. With today’s two passing touchdowns and 314 aerial yards, the team extended its single-season records in both categories with 37 touchdowns and 3,832 yards this season. The 1991 squad held both pervious-best marks with 30 passing scores and 3,379 yards. ECU passers also have 369 completions on 570 attempts this season, the third-highest totals for both in a single season by a team in Conference USA history. The Pirates recorded 452 yards of total offense to surpass the 400-yard mark for the seventh-straight game and ninth time this season. In the last two years, ECU had seven games with 400 or more yards of total offense. o East Carolina is 21-4 in its last 24 games when reaching 400 or more yards of total offense. With its 250+ passing yards (314) and the loss, ECU has claimed 13 of the last 15 home contests when throwing for 250 yards or more. The offensive line surrendered a sack in the second and third quarters, snapping a three-game streak without allowing quarterback drop. Heading into today’s contest, the unit ranked 20th nationally in fewest sacks allowed (1.1 sapg). East Carolina continued its redzone success, converting six-of-seven opportunities. The Pirates are now 53-of-58 inside the opponents’ 20-yard line this season. ECU entered the game ranked sixth in the country in redzone efficiency (92.3%). The Pirates were held to six-of-14 on third down today against SMU after going 3-of-11 on third down at Rice. o The Mustangs converted 12-of-17attempts on third down. Their two fourth-down conversions gave the Pirates 20 successful fourth-down attempts this season. In all of 2009, East Carolina totaled seven fourth-down conversions. SMU’s Zach Line surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark (123), making him the sixth opposing running back to gain 100 or more ground yards in the last five contests. SMU totaled eight yards on punt returns during the game. In the last three contests, the Pirates had surrendered just one punt return yard. With the Mustangs’ 45 points today, ECU has allowed 54.8 points per game in the last five contests (1-4 record). o The Pirates are 50 shy of tying North Texas in 2008 for the NCAA FBS record for most points allowed in a single season. Matt Milner’s third-quarter sack was the Pirates’ first during a home game since the second contest of the season, against Memphis, when the team recorded five. The first-quarter shutout of SMU was the first scoreless quarter by an opponent since Marshall’s third and fourth frames Oct. 23. The 10 first-half points for the Mustangs were tied for the fewest allowed in the opening half by the Pirates this season. The 24 combined points for the two teams were a season low, four less than North Carolina and ECU scored Oct. 2. SMU’s Ja’Gared Davis returned a Jonathan Williams fumble in the third quarter for a touchdown, the first fumble return for a score by an opponent since Kentucky’s Ventrell Jenkins’ 56-yard rumble at the Jan. 2, 2009 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The Mustang defense limited the Pirates to 43 yards of total offense in the second quarter. The Pirates booked six tackles for a loss (-18 yds.) in the game, bringing their total to 19 (-57 yds.) in the last three games after having 11 for -18 yds. in the previous four tilts. With its first-quarter touchdown, ECU extended its streak to a school-record 167 games without suffering a shutout.
