INGRAVE JOHNSTONE C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER ‘Realising the potential of every child within a caring Christian community’ Friday 15th January 2016 Dear Parents and Carers, Do you all feel as though we have been back at school for ages? We all do, and that includes the children! The new term is already busy and the children are well underway with their new topics and new learning. OUTDOOR LEARNING Class 1 and Class 4 commenced their outdoor learning activities this week in Thorndon Park. Organised and delivered by the Essex Wildlife Rangers, the sessions will support the children’s learning in school. Our sessions this week helped the children to find out more about the Park and the area we are going to be working in and more about the safety rules. Year 1 were able to sing songs around the campfire, play hide and seek (to help them get to know the area) and discover the variety of colours to be found in the woods in the winter time. Year 4 played hide and seek and then started building dens, ready to develop next week. A great (if muddy) time was had by all. Here are some pictures of the Year 1 children enjoying their activities:
Year 1 did some fabulous writing about their morning in Thorndon and this is what some of them had to say about their adventure: “My favourite part was playing hide and seek and sitting around the fire.” (Lexi) “My favourite bit was the hide and seek and finding the colours to the flowers and trees.” (Charlie) “My favourite part was sitting around the fire and eating and drinking. I liked playing hide and seek and counting. My second favourite part was when we were walking. I liked the toilets.” (Jake)
Next week we’ll share thoughts and pictures from Class 4. The more adults we have to help the children, the more activities the children will be able to do once we get to Thorndon Park. So if you are free on a Tuesday, it would be great to include you in our outdoor learning adventure. Class 1 leave school at 9 am (returning at 11.45) and Class 4 will leave school at 12.45, returning just before home time. Throughout the year, we hope to offer all the children in the school this exciting opportunity of learning outside in the wonderful resource that is Thorndon Park.
CURRICULUM SHARES We hope you found the Curriculum Shares each year group sent out useful to help you support your child’s learning at home and to inform you about what the children are learning in school. Please do pop in to school to meet with your child’s class teacher if you would like any clarification about your child’s learning or what sorts of things you can do outside of school to help your child. YEAR 6 SATS ARRANGEMENTS Thank you to all of you who came along to the meeting Mrs Allan held this week to provide information about Year 6 assessments later on in the school year. Mrs Allan has sent out a copy of the slides she used for the meeting to all Year 6 parents and carers. If you didn’t attend the meeting and would like anything clarified, please do pop in and see Mrs Allan or myself. ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY Thank you everyone for your cooperation in helping the new arrangements for the end of the school day work smoothly. Don’t forget to return the slips to school to confirm whether your child is allowed to leave the school premises independently at the end of the day if they are in Years 5 or 6. Also, for all year groups, don’t forget to return the lists of adults who are able to collect your child at the end of the day in your absence. SPORTING EVENTS We have had a very busy time so far this half term with 2 sporting events – one being dodgeball and the other indoor athletics. As you may remember, our school Dodgeball Team made it through to the County Finals Dodgeball Event which took place in Southend last Friday. The entire team worked extremely well and made it through to the ‘Super 8’s’ which was the half way stage of the competition but were sadly defeated at this point. A huge well done to all of the team: Damon Pearse, Roman Brandon, Toby Beeson, Harry Stevenson-Fernley, Ellis Johnson-Briggs, Jack Summers, Alex Griffiths, Abi Nutman, Beth Savill and Izabelle Belcher. On Tuesday, lots of children from Years 5 and 6 went to Shenfield High School to take part in the Indoor Athletics competition. The children took part in a range of track and field activities including vertical jump, chest push, javelin, speed bounce and obstacle relay. Everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves as after the scores from all of the events were collated, Ingrave Johnstone placed 5th overall. A massive congratulations to all of the children on their efforts and a special thank you to Coach Mike for coaching and supporting the children at the event.

ATTENDANCE As we always say, attendance at school at all times is very important and that 96% is considered by the Government to be good attendance. The Class with the highest attendance this week is Class 1 with 99.44%. Well done! The whole school attendance this week is 97.96%. MISS DOLAN For those of you with children in Early Years, Miss Dolan will write to you next week to invite you in to meet with her in the week commencing 25th January. She will let you know the actual date and time early next week. WINTER WEATHER Any information about possible school closures or late opening times brought about because of adverse weather conditions would be sent to you by Parentmail as soon as any decisions had been made by myself and the Governors. We would also update the website immediately. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us for the remainder of the winter, but the cold snap reminded me that we hadn’t mentioned how the school would communicate this information to you. MRS KENT We have finally reached Mrs Kent’s last day (for the time being)! We all wish her the very best and we are very much looking forward to hearing her news in the coming weeks. As soon as we hear anything, we will let you all know. Bye Bye Mrs Kent, good luck!
