February Bible Reading
Dear Friends of Africa’s Hope, Christine and Jean fell in love across a cultural battlefield. Christine was from the Tutsi tribe and Jean was Hutu. Their tribes were sworn enemies. They met at an Assemblies of God Bible school in Tanzania, where the love of Jesus united them, breaking through longstanding tribal animosities. Soon after returning to their home country of Rwanda, they founded and co-pastored the nation’s first Assembly of God congregation. They had a heart for church planting, and over the next few years they started more than eleven churches. In early 1994, because of an increased number of incidents regarding ethnic violence they sent their children across the border to stay with family members in Zaire. In late March, they traveled by bus to Zaire to visit their children for a few days.

When it came to return home for Christine’s work, no one knew that overnight a genocidal attack against members of the Tutsi tribe and moderate Hutus would begin. In the next one hundred days, as many as a million people would face violent death.
—
Away from family and constant danger, Christine sought shelter with friends. They were reluctant to allow her to enter their homes for fear of reprisal. “The Lord will protect your home as He covers me,” she assured them. Despite the many risks, multiple families sheltered her.

Meanwhile Jean, safe with the children in Zaire, did not know if Christine was dead or alive. Daily he watched the flood of refugees crossing the border, listened to the news, and prayed for his wife and the churches he led. When the genocide finally ended, Christine, Jean, and their children were safely reunited. The country now in shambles needed to hear a clear proclamation of the love of Jesus. This couple was a shining example of how the gospel could bridge deep divisions of hate and bigotry. Their Bible training helped them spread the only message that can change hearts and bring real lasting peace between enemies. The Rwandan genocide happened 24 years ago, but for many the wounds of war still remain. A nation of aching hearts needs Jesus. Many more biblically trained pastors must be sent to plant churches in every part of this nation of 11 million people.

Jean is now the General Superintendent of the Rwanda Assemblies of God. His dream is to build a bible school to train up new pastors for effective ministry to his country. Many lack the funds to pay for this education. We ask that you please pray and consider gifts for these students of tremendous potential. -Yours for an increasingly redeemed Africa, John Easter, Director of Africa’s Hope
