Interstellar Welcome For Teachers Rio Grande City CISD had an interstellar welcome for all the teachers and staff on Tuesday, August 18, 2015. The event began with the Board of Trustees greeting everyone as they came in through the door into the Multi-Purpose Center where a delicious breakfast was waiting for them. Teachers were excited to be back and amazed at this year’s theme. The decorations of space and astronauts gave them a sense that anything is possible if you only Believe! Keynote speaker, Miguel Antonio Compean, mesmerized the audience of teachers and administrators by an emotionally stirring address that reminded all present of the true meaning of why teaching is a vocation; not just a job. His speech began plainly with the statement, “I believe…in me.” It proceeded to illicit responses to thought provoking questions, and fostered the overarching idea that through a teacher’s belief in their students, colleagues, and themselves, ALL is possible. It reminded attendants that the expectations they hold affect the very lives of their students for generations. As the young Mr. Compean so succinctly stated, “You have the most important job in the community today!” The student talent showcased at the general session was incredible starting with Velia Marlette Canales singing the National Anthem, Keynote Speaker Miguel A. Compean, and UIL State Medalist Devin Ramirez. The audience was amazed at the talent that these students possess and to their delight, each one received a standing ovation. “I want to welcome each and every one of you to the 2015-2016 school year,” said Board President Daniel J. Garcia. “I remember when I was an educator and know how much work goes into educating our students. I am honored to have great educators working for our district so I want to wish you a great year.” Superintendent Joel Trigo, Jr. followed by giving the audience his Superintendent’s Message for the year. “The theme Dream It Believe It Achieve It, is something we want our teachers and students to focus on for the rest of the year. Instructional focus and core values are also important to remember because implementing them can lead to district-wide success in our classrooms.”
