Intramural Sports Current NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) shall govern all intramural rules used for volleyball unless modified by the YCP Intramural department for program needs. Teams A team will play with six (6) players on the court at a time. A Co-Ed team must have at least two (2) females on the court at all times. A team may start and play a game with as few as five (5) players. o A Co-Ed team must have two (2) females on the court even if the team only has five (5) players. o If the number of players drops below five (5) for any reason, except for an injury, the team will be forced to forfeit. Teams may have up to twelve (12) players listed on the roster Teams will be limited to two (2) Club Volleyball players. Rules of the Game Best of three games (2 of 3) wins the match. In the first two games, the first team to reach twenty-five (25) points with a two-point advantage wins, with a cap of thirty (30) points. If the score is tied 24-24, then the first team to gain a two point advantage is the winner, or the first to thirty (30) points. If a third game is necessary, the first team to reach fifteen (15) points is declared the winner. If the score is tied 14-14, then the first team to gain a two point advantage is declared the winner. The cap for the third game is 20 points. Rally scoring will be used for all games. Each team is allowed one 30-second time-out per game. Substitutions and Rotations Substitutions may only be made when: play has stopped the referee has acknowledged the substitution The team substituting has the serve. If a player is ejected from the game, they must leave the playing area immediately. 1 player may not serve twice within 6 rotations. Serving Servers are allowed only one toss per serve. o If the first toss is bad, you must allow the ball to drop without making contact, only then will a reserve be awarded. o If any contact is made, the serve will be given to the other team. Playing the Ball The ball may be played off the net and ceiling, but not the curtains/dividers (these are out of play). If the ball contacts the ceiling after crossing the centerline in the air to the opponent’s side, it is considered out of play. Revised 8/15
Illegal Contact – Same as NFHS Carrying: anytime the ball comes to rest in a player’s hands, it is considered an illegal hit. o Scooping, lifting, pushing or allowing the ball to roll on the body is considered carrying. Bumping with two separate hands. o Hands must be together. Double Hit: When any one player makes contact with the ball two (2) consecutive times (excluding blocking exception). The opposing team is not allowed to attack or block on the serve. Back row players may not come up to the net and block or participate in a block. Back row players may not jump or spike in front of the marked ten-foot line. o A player may take off from behind the line and land in front of it, but they may not step on the line before taking off. Faults – Same as NFHS A double fault occurs when players on opposing teams simultaneously commit faults. o The referee will direct a replay. If faults by opponents occur at approximately the same time, the referee shall determine which fault occurred first and penalize that fault. o If this can’t be determined, a double fault will be declared. If the serving team commits a fault the receiving team will receive a point and the serve. If the receiving team commits a fault the serving team will receive a point and continue to serve.
