Break free with free-motion machine quilting! In this class, students will learn the basics to get started with no-mark freemotion machine quilting. Topics covered include sewing machine set-up, quilt preparation, and choosing materials and tools for a successful project. Students will learn continuous line patterns that can be used with traditional or contemporary quilt styles. Several free-motion quilted quilts from instructor’s collection will be shown as examples. This is a beginning class. No prior machine quilting experience is necessary.
Supply List Sewing machine with ability to drop or cover the feed dogs, power cord and foot pedal. Be sure your machine is in good working condition and you know how to operate it. If you have a computerized sewing machine, refer to your owner’s manual or consult your dealer to know what settings are needed when dropping the feed dogs for machine quilting. Single hole throat plate for your machine. Come to class with this installed on your machine. Consult your machine’s owner manual or your dealer on how to install this. A free-motion quilting foot for your machine. (Sometimes it is called a darning foot, or a machine quilting foot, or a hopping foot.) This foot usually has a spring. Do not confuse this with the 1/4inch quilting foot. Contact your dealer if you are unsure. Come to class with this installed on your machine. At least two (2) empty bobbins for your sewing machine Curved quilters basting pins or safety pins (8 or 10 pins is enough) Small pair of sewing scissors Pencil and notebook for taking notes Extension table for your sewing machine (optional)
Class kit: 1 spool machine quilting thread, 1 spool bobbin thread, quilting needles for sewing machine, 100% quilter’s cotton batting and fabric for practice quilt sandwiches. A handout packed with machine quilting tips, terminology and references will be provided in class.
