Iowa M ountaineers. C lub m em bership has grow n to 1,400 after another very active year. O ver 2,500 people participated in one o f the many instructional courses, m ountaineering cam ps, or foreign expeditions. U nder Jim E b ert’s instruction over 492 m em bers learned cross-country skiing at D evils Lake State Park, W isconsin, during January and February. W inter survival skills, proper dress, hypotherm ia, frostbite and avalanche precautions were discussed. D evils Lake was also the site o f eight w eeklong basic rock-clim bing courses in M ay, June and A ugust. O ver 100 m em bers from nine states participated. T hroughout the year the club taught over 1,720 U niver­ sity o f Iowa students the basic skills o f rock clim bing for credit in w eekend courses at D evils Lake. O ver the M em orial Day w eekend 30 m em bers took an interm ediate rock-clim bing course, with over 60 m anned ascents m ade on six different routes. In M arch 75 m em bers spent five days hiking in the G rand C anyon in A rizona. In A ugust Jeff Statler led an outing to the Tetons. Eight m em bers clim bed the Exum Ridge o f the G rand Teton, w hile four ascended the M iddle Teton. The club sponsored a m ountaineering cam p in Idaho’s Saw tooth M ountains A ugust 1-11. W ith over 59 m em bers participating, clim bs were m ade of W arbonnet Peak, Finger o f Fate and M ount H eyburn. The Iowa M ountaineers celebrate their 50th anniversary in 1990. The 50th A nnual B anquet will be held M ay 19-20 in Iow a City at the U niversity o f Iowa M em orial Union B allroom . M em bers are registering to attend from 14 states. Trips for 1990 include: a four-w eek hiking and clim bing trip to New Z ealand in January-February; a D evils Tower, W yom ing, trip in June; a trip to five European countries in June-July to clim b eight m ajor peaks in the A lps; and finally, a 10-day Canadian M ountaineering C am p in A ugust in B anff N ational Park.
