Issue 31 Preview July 20, 2016 Loaves & Fishes Report Free Discipleship Tools for Prisoners

“I live in a cell by myself and I’m locked down 23½ hours a day. The guy in the cell next to me taught me how to read the Bible. He shared your issue of Loaves & Fishes with me and I loved it. I’m writing to request a subscription to Loaves & Fishes. With your help I will become stronger in the Lord. Thank you.”

O

ur goal is to mail issue 31 by the end of August. We are on track to have it designed and printed by then, but we still lack $10,000 for printing plus $7,000 for postage to mail the subscriptions. We invite your prayers and support to keep Loaves & Fishes on a quarterly schedule. Overcoming bitterness is a popular topic request for Loaves & Fishes. In the last couple of issues, we’ve looked at what faith is and what following Jesus looks like in everyday life. Now in issue 31, we establish the connection between faith and forgiveness, drawing lessons from the lives of Joseph and Saul in the Old Testament. In “Convict on the Throne,” Anthony explores the reasons some people are destroyed by suffering while others grow stronger. He explains how faith is a vaccine against bitterness, allowing us to look away from our own problems and see God’s goodness.

Understanding God’s goodness is foundational for facing our dark times by faith. “Goodness That Leads to Repentance” reminds readers that God is love and that even His wrath arises out of love for His creation. Sin is a fatal wound in our nature which God longs to heal, not a personal insult which causes Him to despise humanity. Because God loves us deeply, He refuses to look the other way in disgust while sin destroys us; instead, God is pursuing us with His goodness, inviting us back to Him. “Redeeming Time in Prison” invites readers to make the most of their time behind bars to build character, skills, and knowledge. Besides these, this issue contains an interesting mix of puzzles, stories, poems, and Bible-based articles on science and marriage. We are eager to get this issue into the hands of our readers soon. —Lavern Gingerich

Dear valued friends, Thank you very much for your most recent donation of Loaves and Fishes issue 30. Your continued support, compassion, and kindness are awe-inspiring. It seems your booklets arrive like clockwork and we feel very blessed for that! I cannot emphasis enough how grateful I am for your thoughtfulness. [Loaves & Fishes] is one of the few methods by which the women can receive nuggets of wonderful religious insight. The women also love the testimonies and poetry.

My name is Lucas Durrill, and I am in Missouri serving a seven year sentence. I woke up today and found a copy of Loaves and Fishes lying on my bed. The first story brought tears to my eyes, and the poetry is phenomenal! I'm a big fan already, and I'm writing this letter in hopes of receiving a subscription to Loaves and Fishes as well as any other literature that you have to offer. I would greatly appreciate it. The women pray for you and your wonderful organization in their prayer groups every Friday. Sincerely, Chaplain Mary Ann Collins Bedford Hills Correctional Facility Bedford Hills, NY

I've been in prison for six years. Before coming to prison, I knew of God, but I did not know God. I was very scared, lonely, and depressed the first year I was in prison, and I knew I needed to make some changes. Instead of playing dominoes and watching TV, I decided to go to church and other Christian classes. I now know Christ, and my life is forever changed because of volunteers from the free world and those at Loaves and Fishes, who publish Christian material to keep me inspired and motivated. I want to thank all of the volunteers who sacrifice their lives for those in prison. Larry Anthony Harris Lynaugh Unit, Fort Stockton, TX

Dear family, I praise our Lord Jesus Christ for your answering the call to serve those of us in prison. We get great joy from the issues you painstakingly put together. Thank you all. Sister in Christ, Ruth Raymond Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center, Las Vegas, NV
