Diggers by candlelight..
Ivydale School Expansion Newsletter December 2015 Issue 14 Dear Families, Welcome to Issue 14 Welcome to the December edition of the Expansion Newsletter and the final edition of 2015. In this edition I bring you news of the activity on site at the close of the year; a full 12 months on from the submission of the orignal planning application. There is also an update on the refurbishments planned for Ivydale Road, a reminder about admissions and the launch of a new pupil competition to keep children busy over the winter holidays.
Admissions Please note that the consultation for the distance criterion for admission to Ivydale for September 2017/18 is now open and you can feedback to Southwark Council through the council website. Comments should be made by completing the consultation response form and sending it by post to Southwark Council or email to

O.K so it wasn’t exactly candle light I spotted on site as I drove along Inverton Road one dark afternoon last week - but it was certainly darkish and there was certainly light and a digger! I was most surprised myself to see the top of brightly coloured digger trundling across the site. I can report to you now that it was in the process of removing the pile of rubble that you may have seen on the photographs taken from the top of Newland’s roof in the last issue. It is exciting to see this activity after what seems like such a long while. Although it was too dark to photograph then I went back the next day for the construction vehicle fans in our readership (or at least Year One anyway!).
On and around site Car drivers and their passengers may have noticed a smoother journey along Inverton Road in the last few weeks. The team have now removed the speed bump that has scraped underneath many a car including mine! This traffic control strategy will be replaced in due course with alternative traffic calming measures and you will be able to read more about them here in the coming months. Two crossovers have also been created to facilitate vehicular access to the site and these are already being used. This week we have seen the delivery of the site offices which is a significant next step. What is exciting for us also is the planned installation of a time delay camera on one of the buildings. This will keep a fantastic record of the building works and I can’t wait to get some shots showing us
what is going on. In the meanwhile have a look at the expansion web pages to see what the site looks like this week behind the hoardings.
Interior design We have had another mamoth design meeting this month and I can report that this stage of the design process is now complete. The school has now signed off on the colour palette for the interior and the staff have chosen their staffroom carpet (a particularly fetching shade of green). The final stages of the interior design process will see us choosing chair colours and fixtures for the classrooms. This is quite a lot of fun and there can be very many different opinions to listen to. One thing this project is certainly achieving is the development of great team work!
continue well into the New Year. In the meantime as I mentioned last issue, the School Council are preparing to invite children to get involved in a new competition. Your children can get a head start on this by thinking about how to get the message across that building sites are unsafe places. We are keen to make sure that everyone realises that although the new site is exciting, it is not a place to play and no one should try and visit by themselves. You can encourage your children to think about this message and stay safe by entering the competition below which will close after the New Year.
Ivydale Road refurbishment The Ivydale Road refurbishment scheme is becoming a reality as planning applications are being put together to develop the catering facility and to prepare the ground floor for children in their early years at school. Drawings are being put together of the developments and a staged program of early works being carefully planned. It isn’t all architectural glamour though and our poor Premises Manager Vic has had to poke his head up into some particularly dirty spaces around school to try and work out what needs be done. Let’s just say I hope the pigeon’s haven’t used the loft as a bathroom for as many years as children have spent in it’s classrooms.
Families and expansion I am still working on plans to get as many children and families as possible involved in some of the decision making around our transition to a two site school and this work will
In the next issue Next time I hope to look ahead to the work that will begin on site and turn the designs into a real building. 2015 has been an incredibly busy year behind the scenes for the Expansion Team and it looks like 2016 will be even busier. In the meantime I wish you all a safe and happy holiday. Adele Audin Expansion Lead
