The project is housed in a spacious 3 bedroom-1 hall- kitchen-2 bathroom, apartment. There is a also a large balcony where the children had lined their shoes. In this balcony was a washing machine. The kitchen had a stove and a cylinder but I did not see much in terms of cooking utensils which is little strange given that one has to cook for 10-15 children. The hall was kept neat and clean. On one side was a bench. On the other side was a small book case and a television. There was also a water cooler. The two bedrooms were segregated: One for the older boys and one for the younger boys. There were two bunk beds in the bedroom meant for the older boys- meant for 4 boys. The bedroom for the younger boys too had bunk beds-5 bunk beds. This room also had a water cooler. There were two toilets- one indian style and one western style. Amit told me that they pay a rent of Rs 14000/- per month which is pretty cheap for the locality and the size of the apartment.

The boys are all enrolled in a private school which is located in Dhaula Kuan. There is a van, which is parked outside Aman, that is used to convey them to school and back. Last yea they were paying Rs 100/- month as fees. This year it has been raised to Rs 800/The boys are enrolled from nursery to class V. Two of the boys have passed the national open school exam - class V and class VIII respectively. I did talk to the boys and they seem very friendly and outgoing. They confirmed that they are going to school and when I questioned about their work, they answered. Most of the boys are orphans or even if they have parents, they are in no condition to take back the boys as they themselves are homeless. However, there are some runaway boys who if they express an interest, are reunited back with their families. Currently, all the children come from their day care center at Jama Mas Computers: One computer was purchased through Asha' funding. Other computers were donated by donors. As they were not in good condition, Jamghat had them repaired.

Overall: It is a good project and should be supported. However, there are small things that make me little uneasy. The project is just too good. The lack of utensils in the kitchen was a surprise. But maybe I did not look too closely? The fee also surprised me. As far as I know the schools are not supposed to charge any fees. Amit says that it is so difficult to get admission (which is true) that they have decided not to fight the fees issue. But we do have a project in Delhi that can help in this issue. Maybe something that you people can pursue with Amit. Amit did ask me to visit their day care center at Jama Masjid. It is something that I plan to do. Maybe also do a surprise visit to Lado sarai project.
