JAMGHAT - Aman Lado Sarai, Delhi, India SITE VISIT REPORT Jamghat is a registered NGO comprising of young adult professionals and volunteers. They run a 24 hour shelter for boys called Aman in Lado Sarai, Delhi. The site visit was conducted by Rajamani Vijayaraghavan on January 4, 2014. Key observations:
The shelter currently houses 17 boys.
Well maintained shelter with a good atmosphere for children.
All children either attend school or undergo vocational training.
There is a full time caretaker and children seemed happy and in good health.
A tutor comes in regularly to help the children with school work.
I had first visited Aman in December 2009. I am happy to report that the center has made several improvements in the living conditions especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. Earlier, the children at Aman were brought from the Jama Masjid area slums by Jamghat. Since 2010, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) which provides license to Jamghat to operate Aman has been identifying children for the shelter. Jamghat makes continuous efforts to engage with the parents of the children at the shelter. The parents who are in Delhi also visit their children regularly and the children are also given an opportunity to visit them during holidays and festivals. I was happy to see several of the children I met in 2009 still being part of Aman while I was also informed of many who have either returned to their parents or have graduated from Aman at the age of 18 and found a job. They are also facing several challenges like increasing rent and maintenance issues at their current site but Mr. Amit, who is the head of Jamghat, is working hard to sort these out. They are also looking for an alternative site. Overall, the facility is being run well and is providing an invaluable service to the homeless children of Delhi. They are funded by various sources and Asha’s contribution for their educational expenses is extremely crucial. I recommend Asha to continue funding the education related aspects of the project e.g. books, tutors etc Please also see attached photos from the site visit.
