The McCormack Messenger January 2016
OUR UNITED STATES MISSION WORK UPDATE Our Roles in Support of Bible Translation Have Changed Most of you know that we have enjoyed supporting Bible translation by teaching the children of translators and other missionaries at Black Forest Academy. We have now moved back to our Minot ND home where we can support Bible translation in new ways. David now visits (by phone or Skype) with every new member of Wycliffe Bible Translators, and helps them determine the budget for their eventual work all around the world. Helen will be an ‘as needed’ educational consultant for Wycliffe members moving to the extended European field and who have children with special educational needs. She is also writing articles for MissionNext which is the parent organization of Finishers whose goal it is to help Boomers find ways to serve in a foreign field. It was Finishers that first opened our eyes to the possibility of becoming missionaries even though we were in our late 50’s when we started.
PRAYER Please praise God for: The blessing of spending the Christmas season with most of our family Further direction for Helen’s future work Please pray for: Wisdom to keep commitments reasonable
How Varied are the Roles of Wycliffe Members? Before we joined Wycliffe, we knew that we didn’t have the necessary skills to be Bible translators. Even though we have learned a tiny bit of Lithuanian and a little German through the years, we are not linguists. Many are surprised by the amazing number of support people needed so that translation can progress. To give examples of those roles, on the back we are listing the occupations of the 33 new individual or family Wycliffe members with whom David is currently working.
Would You Like to Hear More? We are available to come to your church or other groups to share our mission vision. This is not to raise funds for ourselves as God has provided sufficiently. The purpose of any presentation would be to share world wide needs. The way to meet those needs can be as varied as the occupations of those reading this newsletter. There are many poor who need practical assistance, schools who need teachers, mission organizations who need computer tech assistance, janitors and….the list of possibilities could fill more than one of these newsletters! Finally, anyone, armed with the necessary knowledge, could find many ways to enrich their prayer lives. Missionaries and people groups NEED your prayers.
This fall we enjoyed recreating a sign for the top of our garage to remind others of the real reason for Christmas. To read our previous newsletters, see http:// trinitychurchminot.org/ ministries/missionaries

It is true that we are no longer teachers. However, we just could not resist creating a little quiz for your brain’s enjoyment!! It is probably hard to imagine that there are about 7000 active languages in the world. The graph divides those languages into five groups. In the space provided, we invite you to guess the letter (A, B, C, D or E) for each language group. Answers are printed at the bottom of this page. _____ Languages for which the entire Bible is available _____ Languages for which the entire New Testament is available _____ Languages which only some books of the Bible are available _____ Languages in which none of the Bible is available but for which work is in progress _____ Languages in which none of the Bible is available and for which translation work has not even begun
We were able to enjoy more than one Christmas celebration with family.
The picture on the left shows Christmas at our Minot home with our son as well as Helen’s brother and wife. Since puppies are not always cooperative, I’ve included our son’s dog separately. The other picture is with David’s brother and wife along with their children and grandchildren. The correct order of the languages is A, C, B, E, D. The year 2015 was monumental for Bible translation in that 2015 was the first year in which more translation projects were in progress than remained to be started. Wycliffe’s goal is that by 2025, all translation projects will have at least begun.
