“I LOVE THE PRESSURE OF BEING A GOALIE, IT’S LIKE THE QUARTERBACK IN FOOTBALL, I CAN CONTROL THE GAME.”
I was born to stop the puck – Booya! // FOR MANY PLAYERS THE FIRST YEARS OF HOCKEY ARE
ABOUT THE BASICS; SKATING, PASSING AND SHOOTING. Jason Da Silva started playing hockey at the age of four in Milton and his focus has always been on stopping pucks. “I knew that I was going to be playing net” Jason explained. Before every game and practice Jason’s coach would ask who wanted to play goalie and Jason’s hand would shoot up to volunteer; while his father Joe would struggle to lower it so other kids would have a chance “I would always end up being the kid in net and would look up at my dad in the stands with a big smile on my face”. However, Joe remembers Jason’s first hockey experiences a bit differently. “Jason loaded up the car himself with all of his equipment and was honking on the horn to hurry me up about 5 hours before his game”.

His love of playing goal became quite clear while he was trying out for his first team in Milton. His coach Gary Abraham asked who wanted to be the goalie for the season and Jason volunteered. “When I got home and told him I was playing goalie [dad] was shocked, he thought it was a phase and that it would wear off, it didn’t”, said Jason. Jason always knew that he would be a goalie from the first time he stepped onto the ice. “I love the pressure of being a goalie, it’s like the Quarterback in football, I can control the game” explained Jason. Now, Jason plays goal for the Halton Hurricanes Minor Midget AAA team. Coming off of a gold medal OMHA AAA Championship win in his Major Bantam season, Jason worked hard in the off-season so he would be able to help his team reach this level again “I worked out at Fire Power Training. I also took hot yoga and worked with my goalie coach Scott Dellivadova” explained Jason. In addition to his
off-season fitness regime, Jason works on his game away from the trainers and rink “I use a reaction ball to keep my speed up and I shoot pucks at my hockey net with my goalie stick. I think being able to play the puck as a goalie is a really good skill to have”. This past summer, Jason had the opportunity to play with Team OMHA’s Under-16 team in Kitchener. Jason was the winning goalie in the gold medal game against Team GTHL, backstopping the team to a 3-1 victory. Jason appreciated the opportunity to play for this team and feels he benefited greatly “I was treated like a pro at the U16’s”. Jason also credited the success of the team to the leadership of the team staff “the coaches and training staff treated us like athletes and their winning attitude rubbed off on us”. “The greatest thing was seeing how all of these guys from different teams just came together and left everything on the ice and won a championship” tells Jason. Jason was named to Team Ontario to represent the province in Halifax at the 2011 Canada Winter Games. “I am honoured to represent my province and to be part of a team with so much skill and talent. I am excited to see how we will come together as a team. Hopefully we will and be able to prove how good of a hockey province Ontario is” states Da Silva. With his recent success Jason gives a lot of credit to his parents and current coaches. “My coaches Joe Migliaccio, Gary Abraham, Chris Milek and Tony Caravaggio have been extremely supportive with me and my teammates. Their message to us is to work for the guys next to you, play for your team. My parents have always told me to just go out have fun and work hard,” shared Jason. In the future Jason hopes that he will be able to work his way from the provincial level to the national level and play for Team Canada at the World Junior competitions and someday he hopes to be living in a big old city playing in the NHL.
// UA Undeniable Advantage: Jason uses his strength and speed to make big saves that will change the outcome of any game. Whether it’s across the crease or a big glove save, Jason knows he has the ability to control what side of the scoreboard his team will be on. www.OMHA.net
