Jesus Is Baptized Jesus had a cousin named John who lived far from town near the Jordan River. John spoke with powerful words and told people to repent from their sins. People called him John the Baptist or John the Baptizer. His clothes were made from camel hair, and he wore a wide leather belt. He caught locusts and ate them with honey. “Turn to God and be baptized because God is about to do something wonderful very soon. Get ready. The Lord will soon be here,” John said. More and more people came to listen to John, and they asked him, “Are you the one who is going to save us as it is promised in the Bible?” But John said, “No, I am not the one, but I am preparing everything for Him.” So John baptized many people in the Jordan River to mark their decisions to turn from sin and live according to God’s law.

One day Jesus came to the Jordan River where John was baptizing people. Jesus went over to John and asked to be baptized by him. But John said, “Jesus, You don’t need to be baptized. I need to be baptized by You.” John knew that Jesus was God’s Son. But Jesus said, “I want you to baptize Me. This is how it must be.” So John baptized Jesus. When Jesus came up from the water right after His baptism, something wonderful happened. It was as if a gate right into heaven had been opened and the voice of God was heard high in the sky. The voice said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” And it looked as if a white dove was descending down from heaven upon Jesus. This was God’s Holy Spirit. Jesus was God’s Son and the great messenger John had been describing to all the people. After this, Jesus went out into a desert place to be alone and pray to God. Jesus prayed a very long time without eating. Jesus knew he needed God to give Him strength to do His important work on earth.
