B Whodunit?
The Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries brought young people from around the diocese together at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul on July 20 for a life-sized version of the board game “Clue.” At top: PGYM chair Shawn Evelyn, left, explains the rules to teams representing St. James’ Church, South Pasadena; St. Andrew’s Church, Fullerton; St. John’s ProCathedral, Los Angeles; St. Athanasius’ Congregation, Los Angeles; St. Wilfrid of York Church, Huntington Beach; and St. Francis’ Church, Simi Valley. Clergy, diocesan staff and PGYM members played the roles of Clue suspects. Pictured at left are Frank Alton, priest-in-charge of St. Athanasius, as “Mr. Green”; Rachel O’Connell of St. Wilfrid’s as “Mrs. White”; and Shawn Evelyn as “Andre the Butler” (master of ceremonies). At right: Alex Smith of All Saints’ Church, Santa Barbara, as “Miss Peacock”; Bishop J. Jon Bruno as “Professor Plum”; Executive for Operations David Tumilty as “Colonel Mustard”; and the culprit, “Miss Scarlett,” as portrayed by Kelli Grace Kurtz, vicar of St. John’s Church, La Verne. Bishop Bruno matched the PGYM’s offered prize so that St. Wilfrid’s and St. James’— both of which had members on the winning team (pictured below with Bruno) — received $1,000 for youth ministry or pilgrimage.
ishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno invites all in the Diocese of Los Angeles to join him in six county-based forums focused on community safety and outreach to reduce violence. Local civic leaders will be among panelists in each presentation, scheduled as follows:

I
n Luke’s Gospel we read today of the disciple’s request to Jesus to teach them how to pray. Jesus’ response as recorded in this Gospel is a part of what we know as the Lord’s Prayer. On more than one occasion I’ve been asked to teach someone how to pray. I talk about having a conversation with God. I introduce people to different prayer styles. The prayer I fall back on most, when I am overwhelmed or scared, is the Lord’s Prayer. If I’m really scared or upset, I repeat the Lord’s Prayer over and over again — it calms and centers me. The Lord’s Prayer was the first prayer I taught both my children. By the time they were 2, they could say that prayer. One day, at Family Camp when we were living in the Diocese of California, I shared with thenBishop Bill Swing that Jardine, our daughter, knew how to pray. He asked her, “Jardine, how do you pray?” She looked at him, and said, “Furst, you

put the han creen.” Then she slapped her hands together. “And then you go too fast” — and she began moving her hands together as if rubbing something into them. She then closed her eyes, held her hands together and said, “Our Fadder, who ard in heben, hallow be tie name.” She then continued with the rest of the prayer. I explained to Bishop Swing that every night Jardine climbed in bed with me. I put hand cream on our hands, and we both rubbed the cream into our hands. Then we prayed, and we always started with the Lord’s Prayer. The bishop looked at me and smiled. What is your favorite prayer or the prayer you turn to when you are scared? What is your prayer practice? ?
