SUCCESS WITH INTEGRITY - WHAIA TE PONO
Principal’s introduction Greetings to all of our parents, family and whanau. Welcome to our newsletter covering the first half of Term 2 2015. On reflecting over the past seven weeks of Term Two I am reminded again what a privilege it is to be a part of Mount Maunganui College. There are so many talented students who continue to excel academically, culturally and in the sporting arena. The school ball was held on the evening of 2 May and is the social highlight on our school calendar for our Year 12 and 13 students. In my opinion this was one of the best school balls that I have attended and I would like to congratulate Sarah Taylor and Nina Lopes for their organisation of this event. The chief security guard for the evening commented at the conclusion of this event that our students were a real credit to Mount Maunganui College! In Week 4 of this term we held an Excellence Assembly to acknowledge those students who gained Excellence endorsements for their Level 1 or Level 2 study in 2014. This was a wonderful occasion and it was great that the academic success of these students was recognised and acknowledged by the Year 11, 12 and 13 year groups. Our talent quest was held on 13 May and was an opportunity to showcase and admire the wide range of skill and talent that permeates throughout this school. This was another successful evening and another reason to be proud of our students. One of my personal highlights for the year is the school cross-country. There is something special about whole school events were students dress up and celebrate their school houses. It is interesting that our illness statistics spike on this day and I am sad that students miss out on being a part of our school community. Having the opportunity to walk or run this course with your friends, peers and teachers leads to a special camaraderie and I would encourage everyone to be involved next year. I would like to acknowledge Water Polo as one of the sports in which we have national and international success. Congratulations to Shinae Carrington and Grace Elisara who have been selected to represent in the 2000 born NZ Under15 squad to travel to Sydney and play in a Trans Tasman State Series. Ella Pollock was also selected in the squad but unfortunately through
injury wasn’t available to travel. This continues on a great representation from the college at the high end of the sport as we already have three students currently representing New Zealand in Hungary, namely, Georgia Reardon-Nikara, Malia Josephson and Alisha Winstanley. I had the pleasure of accompanying our Sheilah Winn Shakespeare students to the national festival over the Queens Birthday weekend. Our students opened the festival and set the standard for the acts to follow. Their performance was incredible and I could not have been prouder of each and every one of our performers. At the time of reading this newsletter our senior students will have received their Term 2 reports. I would encourage parents to take the time to sit down and go over this report with your student and to take advantage of the Parent Teacher interviews being held later this term. The junior reports will be issued on 19 June. In conclusion I would like to thank all of our students and teachers for their commitment to our school. As we look forward to the next few weeks I recommend to you our Polar Bear Plunge to be held at Omanu beach on 17 June. This event is held in memory of Jed Roberts and Harrison Mundy, the son of ex teacher Allan Mundy. Russell Gordon Principal

SHEILA SHAKESPEARE - WELLINGTON Mount Maunganui College is back from Wellington with a bag of prizes! The University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare National Festival was held at St James Theatre in Wellington over the Queen’s birthday weekend. Schools from all over New Zealand performed 49 scenes from a selection of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Mount Maunganui College won three major awards: • First place for Most Outstanding Performance of a Shakespeare History Play • First place for Best use of Stage for their 15minute Henry V performance. • Elekis Poblete-Teirney came second in the Design a Costume section of the festival for her costume design of Queen Margaret from Richard III. Dawn Sanders the CEO of Shakespeare Globe Cente NZ said the quality of performances this year was the highest in the festival’s history. Wayne Flanagan, Regional Representative for the Bay of Plenty, said that the students were privileged to perform at the prestigious St James theatre on the same stage that held the BEATLES and the great Sir Ian Mckellan, alias ‘Gandalf’.
