STOP PRESS A special request to all our members. As you know Marie has been our Treasurer now for many years and does an excellent job. However we would really love to find someone to take over from her and allow her more time for herself, she has done so much for us. So please do stop and think if there is anyone you know who has some spare time who may think about helping out with this role. Full training will be available and Marie will happily support the new Treasurer in understanding how it all works. So whether it be son, daughter, nephew, niece, grandson, granddaughter, friend or neighbour please do just take a couple of minutes to speak to them and ask them if they would be prepared to support us. You may be pleasantly surprised by their response!
The benefits of being a Branch Member. Branch membership entitles you to subsidised trips organised by the Branch and also means you are insured by Parkinson’s UK whilst at Branch meetings or when you are on Branch trips (which whilst we hope is never needed does provide you with peace of mind). Branch membership helps us to continue to provide regular meetings and support to all of you. So please do renew your membership asap by sending or giving £5 to Marie
Creative drop-in day offers much needed Parkinson’s support People in Derbyshire affected by Parkinson’s are being offered expert local support and advice through a special drop-in day with a creative twist. The free, creative open day entitled, The Arts of Living with Parkinson's, and run by Parkinson’s UK, will take place on Sunday 14 July from 10am to 3:30pm at Deda in Chapel Street, Derby, DE1 3GU. The open day will feature a range of workshops open to anyone affected by Parkinson's. Activities on offer will include dancing, singing, art therapy and samba drumming. Pamela Harrison, a member of the samba drumming band the Samba Bandits, is travelling from Northampton to take part in the event Pamela had been playing in a samba band for several years when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005. She said: “I was determined to carry on drumming for as long as I could and I am still doing it. It helps with my coordination and my short and long term memory, and thumping a drum releases all the frustrations and stresses that can build up”. Harry Wade, Information and Support Manager at Parkinson’s UK for the East Midlands said: “I am really looking forward to our first creative open day and would especially welcome people to come and meet the team and other people with the condition, and to try out some of the workshops. “The event is also a great opportunity to find out how we can support you. We know that having Parkinson’s or being newly diagnosed can be challenging, but we’re here to make sure no-one has to face this alone.”

CONTACTS A fun (true) story A lady and her daughter were keen gardeners. Every Friday they caught the bus and visited Uncle George to help tend his garden and share a cup of tea. On this particular occasion Uncle George (who was a prolific smoker of Cigars) stated that he had read that cigar ash was good for the garden. He then presented the lady with an old cigar box stuffed full of ash for her to take home for her own garden. As they were on their way home they approached the bus stop, the daughter clutching the cigar box. Unfortunately she tripped and as she did the cigar box flew open and ash went everywhere. Mum shouted out “oh no Uncle’s ashes......... “ Needless to say the people at the bus stop scattered and were seen to be brushing themselves down with horrified looks on their faces! Parkinson’s UK new website On Thursday, 27 June 2013, the main Parkinson’s website will change, they are launching a new version of parkinsons.org.uk The vision for the new website has been shaped entirely by feedback from people affected by Parkinson's so if you have access to a computer please do login to take a look

I would like to share with you a poem about Parkinson’s written by Andy McDowell (diagnosed aged 43) to help him tell his kids aged 4 and 7 about Parkinson’s My world got smaller my handwriting, my voice, my walk, my spirit, my balance, the space in the world I take up. It crept up on me in micro increments (those are big words for small and slow) until it arrived with a name Then it became
BIG
and
Scary
And I didn’t want it but now I had a face, a reason for all the smallness and so it became what it is... I may be smaller, slower,
But I’m still me
