Church Family Pot-luck A Whole Lot of Fun” Simple and relaxing were the operative words for the Church Family Pot-Luck held on Sunday May 7th after the morning church service. Over 65 people stayed to enjoy a simple meal of an assortments of soups and salads brought from homes early that morning. The church supplied the drinks and the Sunday Sermon Based Group supplied the bread and dessert. It was nice to sit and chat and meet people we hadn’t met yet. Special thanks goes out to JoAnn Pine and Teresa Westerberg who worked the dishwasher from almost the beginning of the meal. Now there was a picture of servant hearts. The next Church Family Pot-Luck is scheduled for June 4th after the morning worship service. What soup or salad will you bring?

“ The Garden of Your Heart” Gardens are popping up all over Whatcom County. Spring fever has set in and people are stepping outside into the gorgeous sunshine and basking in its warmth and brightness. It’s that time of year when a new sense of freedom stirs our desire to “commune with nature”. Many will head for the hills, others will grab their boats and some will pull out their fishing poles, while others just take long walks or bicycle rides. But gardens are popping up all over Whatcom County. Whether it’s a small container garden or a huge acre or two, there’s excitement and energy that seems to flow out of many of you who begin the annual litany of gardening. It could be flowers, vegetables, landscaping or everything in-between, the vision of what will come of your labor motivates you. It’s hard work getting the soil ready: tilling, adding the compost, fertilizer, other additives, creating the perfect soil for the types of plants you intend to grow. Finally, you add the seedlings, plants and or seeds. But now the battle begins. All that work took place in the first few weeks, but now comes the battle to keep the garden growing. There are deer, rabbits, moles, bugs and fungus to contend with. Oh, and did I mention the weather? Irrigating: not too much and not too little. And there are the weeds – lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of weeds. Not only are they ugly, but they choke off the root systems, steal the nutrients, and reduce the growth and yield of the garden. The time between spring planting and fall harvest seems like a never-ending fight against the forces of evil that intend to destroy your end desire: healthy fruit and beauty. Fences are built, traps are set, eco-friendly chemicals are sprayed, mulch is laid and weeding: lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of weeding. (Did I already write that?) Gardening is hard work. But, for many, it doesn’t seem that way. Being outside finding fulfillment in the joy of those beautiful flowers, the peace of the landscape and the taste of the fruits and vegetables make the hard work all worthwhile.

Growing in our trust of God is much like our gardening process. We need to be sure we have the right environment for our mustard-seed faith in Christ’s love to grow. Then comes the battle to keep the weeds, disease and critters away so that we have the optimum opportunity to produce the fruit that God intended for us to experience and produce. A surrendered heart to Christ and a community of support and love is the best environment. We can find that atmosphere in an attitude of worship and living within a community of followers of Jesus. (Some might call that the church.) The ongoing battle is fought by the hard work of prayer, study and service. All of which actively cultivates our hearts and keeps us focused on all that God has for us to feed and nurture us. Out of the hard work of engaging in that ongoing battle comes the fruit of God’s Spirit that brings joy not only to us, but to all we come into contact. The big difference between growing in our faith and growing a garden is that growing a garden in the Northwest is seasonal, while growing our faith in Christ is year round. We never stop weeding out our self-centeredness. It’s constantly showing up in surprising places. We never stop fighting the urge to be a weed. But, through the help of God’s Spirit we can persevere and enjoy the fruit of His labor through us. It’s so easy to get distracted during the summer (as well as any season of the year). Be sure as your attention is focused on all the excitement and freedom that summer brings, that you don’t neglect the garden of your heart. It will make all the seasons of your life truly fruitful. See you at Sunday worship,

Robert Cameron

Welcome to Pam Lyng . . . It’s with great pleasure that we can introduce Pam Lyng as a new church secretary here at Laurel Church. Pam joined our ministry leadership team in April and has been gradually wading into her duties over the last two months. Pam and her husband Steve just celebrated their 33rd year of marriage. Steve spent time in the Navy moving from place to place as duty called while Pam did the packing and unpacking as well as raise 4 boys. After Steve’s discharge from service, they moved back to Whatcom County where Steve is currently working for Siemens Building Technologies. During those years of moving, Pam spent her copious “free time” taking on various positions at several banks such as a bank teller, working in consumer loans, collections and as an administrative assistant to four bank vice-presidents. And if that wasn’t enough Pam, for a major portion of her time, homeschooled her 4 boys. The 29 and 26 year olds have moved out while the 20 and 19 year old boys are in the process of “breaking free”.

It will be exciting to watch how the Lord will use Pam’s unique gift-mix to serve, minister and help lead us at Laurel Church in the coming months and years. Be sure to be praying for Pam as she discovers God’s leading here at Laurel and be sure to say hi the next time you notice her around the church. Welcome Pam, we’re glad you’re here.

Trail Life Prays for Our Nation . . . Thursday, June 4th was National Day of Prayer across our country and the Trail Life youth and adults made it a point to add to the combined power of people praying for our nation. That evening they met in the Church Chapel and spent over an hour reading scripture and praying lead by committed adults. What a blessing to our nation. What a witness to our community. What an opportunity to build faithful followers of Christ. What a testimony to youth of faithful men demonstrating the importance of prayer. Trail Life is a ministry of Laurel Church with leadership from all over Whatcom County.

A Little Help from Our Friends . . . It was big, heavy and bulky. It was off the church property but needed to be brought back to the church grounds because we were closing our Preschool and the sign needed to be removed from the corner of the Meridian and Laurel. Who would do the job? Up stepped some boys from Zacchaeus Learning Opportunities to “man up” and do the job. With a great positive spirit they man-handled the sign with ease and set it on the west side of the picnic shed. Thanks guys, your work was greatly appreciated. ZLO is one of two homeschooling programs hosted by Laurel Church and has been a good friend to the homeschool community and to us. It’s been a blessing having ZLO here and we look forward to working with them in the Fall.
