2015-16 KAMLOOPS BLAZERS GAME NOTES

March 8th at Tri-City Americans THE FINISH LINE: The Kamloops Blazers franchise is in their 35th season in the Western Hockey League and the 32nd season as the Kamloops Blazers. The Blazers are fourth in the B.C. Division and sixth in the Western Conference with a 32-25-5-4 record this season. The Blazers went 3-0-0-0 last week winning 5-0 over Spokane and back-to-back 3-2 wins over Kelowna. Connor Ingram started all three games last week and finished with a 1.69 goals against average, and a ,969 save percentage. The Blazers are in Spokane tomorrow night and in Kelowna on Friday night to finish a stretch of four straight games on the road. The Blazers conclude the week with a home game against the Vancouver Giants on Saturday night. THE MATCH UP: The Blazers and Americans are meeting for the fourth and final time this season. The Americans beat the Blazers 4-3 back on October 7th in Kamloops, and the Blazers won 3-2 over the Americans on January 8th in Kamloops. These two teams will conclude the season series in Tri-City on March 8th. Vs. ROSTER BREAKDOWN: The Blazers roster currently sits at 24 players (3 goaltenders, 7 defensemen and 14 forwards). The roster includes 13 players selected in the WHL Bantam Draft, seven players via trade, three players from the free agent list, and one player selected from the CHL Import Draft. The roster breakdown by region includes 10 players from B.C., four from Alberta, five from Saskatchewan, two from Manitoba, one from USA, and two from Czech Republic. There are 16 WHL veterans on the roster and seven WHL rookies. BY THE NUMBERS: Matt Needham is the Blazers longest tenured player first suiting up for the hockey club during the 2010-11 season and played his 300th career WHL game on February 6th vs. Edmonton Oil Kings. Needham (158 assists) is 18th in Blazers history. Ryan Rehill is 14th all-time on the Blazers penalty minute list with 504 career minutes… Matt Needham recorded his 150th career assist on January 29th vs. Vancouver… Collin Shirley played his 250th career WHL game on January 29th vs. Vancouver… Quinn Benjafield played in his 100th career WHL game January 29th vs. Vancouver… Connor Ingram is the 11th goaltender in franchise history to play 100 games with the Blazers. KAMLOOPS BLAZERS ‘Who to Watch’: The Kamloops Blazers forwards are led by veteran players Matt Needham (21-37--58), Deven Sideroff (18-35--53), Collin Shirley (34-38--72), Gage Quinney (25-28--53), and Matt Revel (19-28--45). Quinney was acquired from the Kelowna Rockets in October. Needham, Shirley and Revel are all players entering their fourth or fifth seasons in the WHL. 19-year-old import forward Jiri Smejkal (5-22--27) was acquired from the Moose Jaw Warriors for some secondary scoring. Nick Chyzowski (14-10-24) is in his third WHL season and has provided secondary scoring in a more prominent role. Jake Kryski (12-24--36) and Quinn Benjafield (9-14--23) are two 17-year-olds’ both in their second seasons. They have proved to be regular contributors. Matt Campese (8-4-12) has stepped into a larger role this season moving up and down the line-up. Jermaine Loewen (8-6--14) still has time to grow and develop, and has provided a big physical presence on the ice. Garrett Pilon (15-24--39), Spencer Bast (3-8--11) and Erik Miller (1-4--5) are all in their first seasons with the hockey club. Pilon has been terrific as a versatile player moving up and down the line-up. On defense, Ryan Rehill (10-27—37) is the elder statesmen in his fourth and final season in the WHL. Dallas Valentine (3-12--15) was acquired from Moose Jaw in October. He has given the hockey club a veteran presence. Defenseman Cam Reagan (0-5--5) had limited ice time last season, but has started to play regularly this year. Dawson Davidson (5-30--35) has impressed as a 17-year-old playing well at both ends of the ice. Ondrej Vala (3-15--18) is the hockey club’s newest import player from the Czech Republic. The 17-year-old possesses size at 6’4” and plays a solid two-way game. Nolan Kneen (1-6--7) and Conner McDonald (1-2--3) are a pair of 16-year-olds that are in their first season of patrolling the backend. In goal, Connor Ingram (29-15-5-4) solidified himself as the Blazers starter last season and the 18-year-old is continuing his strong play. Dylan Ferguson (3-10-0-0) is the back-up and the 17-year-old has given the team a chance to win in his opportunities this season. TRI-CITY AMERICANS ‘Who to Watch’: The Americans are led offensively by two 20-year-olds in Parker Bowles and Beau McCue. Bowles is one of the top scorers in the WHL with 37 goals and 90 points, while McCue has 22 goals this season. Jordan Topping is having a breakout season with 62 points. The Americans have some scoring depth from some veteran players like Tyler Sandhu and Vladislav Lukin. Maxwell James, Austyn Playfair and Mackenzie Stewart are all heavy forwards that can chip in. Michael Rasmussen and Kyle Olson are a pair of promising 16-year-olds having good seasons. Parker AuCoin, Morgan Geekie, Nolan Yaremko, and Jordan Roy are all first year forwards that are 17. Brandon Carlo and Parker Wotherspoon are the two stalwarts the Americans have on their backend. Carlo, who stands at 6’5”, was a second round pick of the Boston Bruins and has already signed with the hockey club. Wotherspoon was selected by the New York Islanders and also played for Canada at the U-18 World Championships this past April. Juuso Valamaki from Finland is a highly rated prospect in his first WHL season. He isn’t eligible for the NHL Draft until 2017, but has 30 points this season. Brendan O’Reilly and Dylan Coghlan return to the Americans. Kurtis Rutledge and Dakota Krebs are the two first year players on defense. In goal, Evan Sarthou has had an up and down season in his third season in the WHL. He has played in 56 games this season. Nicolas Sanders is in his first full season with the Americans after spending some time with the team last season. The 17-year-old from Calgary has started a few games lately and has suited up in 19 games this year.

INJURY REPORT: Man games lost due to injury – 86. DID YOU KNOW… Don Hay is 2nd in Blazers franchise history behind Ken Hitchcock (291) with 204 career regular season wins… Hay is 2nd all-time in WHL history behind Ken Hodge (742) with 669 regular season wins… Stu MacGregor took over as the Blazers General Manager on October 13th, 2015… Gage Quinney was acquired from the Kelowna Rockets on October 14th in exchange for a 3rd round draft pick… Jiri Smejkal was acquired from Moose Jaw on January 10th for Patrik Maier and a 5th round draft pick… Forwards Collin Shirley and Deven Sideroff played for Team WHL at the CHL Canada Russia Series… Shirley had a team leading five points and Sideroff had two points in two games… Defenseman Nolan Kneen played for Canada’s Under-17 National Team at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek in October/November… Defenseman Ryan Rehill (New Jersey), forward Deven Sideroff (Anaheim), and goaltender Connor Ingram (Detroit) all attended NHL training camps in September… Ondrej Vala (70), Garrett Pilon (187), Dawson Davidson (197) and Connor Ingram (12th among goaltenders), were all rated in NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings… Jermaine Loewen was born in Jamaica and has only been playing hockey for seven years… Matt Needham’s father Mike played for the Blazers from 1986-1990… Nick Chyzowski’s father Dave played for the Blazers from 1987-1990.
