Eleven Indian cadets o f the R ashtriya Indian M ilitary Academ y, all betw een the ages o f 15 and 17, were led by Lieutenant Colonel M.P. Yadav, Principal o f the Nehru Institute o f M ountaineering. They also clim bed the southw est ridge. On May 15, Yadav, Captain Y.S. M eitei and four cadets, Sourav D atta, G ourav H am al, Sourav N aik and G ourav Saini clim bed to the sum m it. O ther Indian expeditions, led by B isw adeb G hosh, Biplab C hatterjee, A shutosh K um ar Sharm a and M iss Sum an K utiyal, reached the top. M iss K utiyal’s 12-m em ber party put six clim bers on the top on A ugust 26 but they w ere caught in an avalanche. M iss Sunita Jhanki was buried in the snow and died. A helicopter search revealed no trace o f her. A 12-m em ber expedition led by R ajesh M ukherjee helped in the rescue. M ukherjee, Subhas Chandra Dey, Phoni Bhusan M ondal, Shravan K um ar and Pradhan got to the sum m it on A ugust 31. John C leare led a 4-m an British party, w hose attem pt is described below. 4 Poles led by Jacek F luder attem pted the difficult 1800-m eter-high east face in October. They clim bed and fixed with rope the low er 350 meters. The leader fell sick at 5300 m eters and the clim b was given up. H owever, Janusz G ołab clim bed the norm al route solo. K amal K.
