Edmonton Oil Kings Notes
RECENT ACTION: The Edmonton Oil Kings stumbled out of the gate and were unable to create a comeback as they fell 4-1 to the Vancouver Giants on Wednesday night in Vancouver. The Giants controlled most of the play in the first jumping out to a 2-0 lead. The first came off a deflection from out of the air by Cain Franson and the second a bounce that looked to go off the body of Vancouver's Jackson Houck. Finally, the Oil Kings were able to answer back midway through the second as Griffin Reinhart joined the rush, followed up on the play and bullied his way back to the front of the net to jam in his third of the season. Assisting on the goal was Michael St. Croix and Dylan Wruck, St. Croix extending his current point streak to 12 games and Wruck scoring his 13th point in his last 10 games. Edmonton would battle adversity killing off a late 5 on 3 power play with hard work and steady play from goaltender Laurent Brossoit. "LB" would finish the night with 30 saves in the loss. Vancouver would continue to smother the Oil Kings attack in the third however finally adding a third period goal and an empty netter for the 4-1 win. The Oil Kings PK was strong all night as then held a potent Vancouver attack to 0 for 8 with the man advantage. The loss drops the Oil Kings record to 11-6-1-1 on the year and into fourth in the Central division.
BE LIKE MIKE: Simply put Michael St.Croix is on fire – he has an 12 game point streak, the second longest current streak in the WHL and has tallied six goals and 14 assists over that time. He leads the team with 21 points (7G,14A) and is 19th in the WHL scoring race. In 2010-11 St. Croix posted the modern franchise record with 48 assists.
LIKE A FOSS: T.J. Foster is second on the team in scoring with 20 points (7G,13A) and second on the team with four power play goals. Foster leads all active Oil Kings with 219 WHL games and has totaled 127 points and 51 goals over that span.
“WRUCK” ING BALL:
Oil Kings other 93-born record holder Dylan Wruck is also on a tear – the modern franchise record holder and the Kings 10-11 scoring leader has posted 13 points (3G,10A) in his last ten games. Last season, Wruck set a modern franchise record with 78 points in 71 games and set a new benchmark for goals in a season with 38.
VS KELOWNA: Tonight is the first of three meetings between the Oil Kings and Rockets this season. Last year, the Oil Kings posted a 1-1-0-0 record against Kelowna. The Oil Kings are 1-5-0-2 all time vs. the rockets in the modern era of the franchise.
THE STORMIN SLOVAK: Oil Kings import defenseman Martin Gernat, an Edmonton Oilers 5
th
round draft pick leads all Oil Kings defensemen in scoring. The 18-year old native of Slovakia has 6 goals and 12 assists for 18 points on the year and he has five multi point games. The native of Kosice, Slovakia is fourth in the WHL scoring race among defensemen and WHL rookies.
CAPTAIN MARK: Second year Captain Mark Pysyk has seven points in his last five games and is plus-3 as he continues his bid to play for Team Canada at the World Juniors this holiday season. He played his 200th WHL career game two weeks ago in Edmonton and tallied a first star performance with 3 assists to help the Oil Kings to a 4-1 win over Everett. He was the modern era franchise’s first WHL Bantam draft pick (3rd overall in 2007) & in 2010 became the first NHL 1st round draft pick (selected 23rd overall by Buffalo) and last season was awarded the Greg Tomalty MVP honor for the second straight season and the Oil Kings Top D-man honor for the third straight season.
THE OIL TOWN TRIO: The Edmonton Oil Kings are proud to congratulate forward Michael St. Croix and defenseman Griffin Reinhart on their selections to Team WHL for the 2011 SUBWAY® Super Series. Team WHL will face Team Russia in games five and six of the series played Wednesday, November 16 in Regina, SK, and on Thursday, November 17 in Moose Jaw, SK. St. Croix and Reinhart join Oil Kings Captain Mark Pysyk as selections with Reinhart playing the November 16th game in Regina in place of the injured Ryan Murray. St. Croix and Pysyk will be in the lineup for the November 17th game in Moose Jaw. The first two games of the series will be hosted by the QMJHL with the OHL hosting games three and four.

THE OILERS ARE COMING!: There’s an Edmonton Oil Kings game hockey fans won’t want to miss.
Edmonton Oilers
Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Smyth, Sam Gagner and Devan Dubnyk will be in attendance Friday November 18th as the Edmonton Oil Kings take on the Prince Albert Raiders Rexall Place on Military Appreciation Night presented by ATB Financial. The five Edmonton Oilers are featured in the Oil Kings World Junior Bobblehead series and all have Canadian Hockey League and World Junior Hockey Championship experience. Smyth (1995), Dubnyk (2006), Gagner (2007), Eberle (2009/2010) and Hall (2010). Any fan with a ticket to the game will automatically be entered to win a chance to attend a private meet and greet with the 5 players.
CORBETT LUND BAND: The Oil Kings newest edition is U.S. born defenseman Cody Corbett whom the team has signed to a standard WHL player agreement. Corbett is 93-born 6'1 210 pound d-man who played last season with the Stillwater Ponies of the Minnesota High School League where he posted nine goals and 13 assists in 26 games. He has a late birthday and as such will be eligible as a 93-born player for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
ROSTER:
Edmonton’s roster sits at 25 players including 2 goaltenders, 8 defencemen and 15 forwards. There are 15 players that
skated with the club during the 2010-11 season. 5 players will be making their WHL debut this season (Tristan Jarry (G – ‘95), Ashton Sautner (D – ‘94), Cody Corbett (D- ’93), Martin Gernat (D – ‘93) and Cole Benson (C – ’95). The three over-age positions are currently held by centre Rhett Rachinski, winger Josh Lazowski and Jordan Peddle. The two import positions are held by a pair of Edmonton Oilers draft picks in Martin Gernat (Kosice, Slovakia) and Kristians Pelss (Preili, Latvia). There are 12 players from Alberta, 5 players from B.C., 2 from Saskatchewan, 2 from Manitoba, 1 from Yukon Territory and 1 U.S. born player.
DRAFT PICKS:
The Oil Kings had a franchise record four players selected at this past summer’s NHL Entry Draft in Minnesota. Two players happened to go in consecutive picks in the third round with the Carolina Hurricanes selecting Keegan Lowe with the 73rd pick and the Edmonton Oilers choosing Travis Ewanyk with the 74th pick. The next to go was Michael St. Croix in the 4th round, 106th overall. The Calgary Flames snagged goaltender Laurent Brossoit in the 6th round with the 164th pick.
WORLD JUNIOR WATCH: The Edmonton Oil Kings are proud co-hosts of the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship this December and January. Captain Mark Pysyk attended the Team Canada Development Camp this August in Edmonton. This is the second time Pysyk has been invited to try out for the National U20 Squad and will be looking for a solid start to the 2011-12 season to solidify a spot on Team Canada this Christmas. Latvian forward Kristians Pelss played for his country last year in the relegation tournament and earned Latvia a spot in Canada’s Pool at this year’s tournament.
SCHEDULE: The Oil Kings are concluding a four game in five night road trip through the B.C. division. Following tonight’s matchup the Oil Kings will move on to Kamloops on Saturday night to take on the Blazers. Puck drop is set for 8:00 MST. All games this season will be broadcast live on the TEAM 1260 and streamed live at WHL.ca. Oil Kings hockey is Edmonton’s best family entertainment value.
