Saturday, January 30th at Kelowna Rockets
MILESTONE COACH: In the Royals’ victory over the Vancouver Giants last week, head coach Dave Lowry recorded his 200th career win in the Western Hockey League. Lowry has earned a 201-93-11-3 record as a head coach in the WHL, which includes 142 wins during his time with Victoria and 59 with the Calgary Hitmen (2008-09). Lowry is only the 43rd head coach in the WHL’s 50 year history to reach this benchmark. POWERPLAY PRECISION: The Victoria Royals have tallied at least a powerplay marker in eight of their last 10 games. During that span, Victoria has gone 12/47=25.5% on the man-advantage. This season the league average powerplay percentage stands at 862/4257=20.3%. Since the Royals established themselves on the island they have recorded a percentage of 66/275=24.0% on the man-advantage in the month of January. LEADING THE CHARGE: After playing the Kelowna Rockets six times this season, Victoria rookie Matthew Phillips leads the team with 11 points (3g-8a). Alex Forsberg and Tyler Soy are tied for the team lead in goals against Kelowna this season with four. Royals’ captain Joe Hicketts is the current active team leader in points against Kelowna with 15 (1g-14a) in 26 career games. ROOKIE RECORD: After scoring four goals in Victoria’s six-game homestand, rookie Matthew Phillips surpassed Royals’ alumni Logan Nelson (23g) for most goals by a Royals’ rookie in a single season. Phillips, with 26 markers this season, currently sits six tallies behind former Chilliwack Bruin Oscar Moller for the all-time franchise record for goals in a rookie season. Moller scored 32 goals for the Bruins during the 2006-07 campaign. STRIKING FIRST: Victoria has scored the opening marker in three consecutive contests, which dates back to Victoria’s 8-2 victory on January 20th against the Medicine Hat Tigers. After yesterday’s opening goal against the Hurricanes, Jack Walker is now tied for the league lead in opening goals with seven. The next closest Royal is Tyler Soy who has scored the opening goal on six occasions. BOB’S ON THE JOB: Victoria Royals’ forward Vladimir Bobylev tallied a pair of assists in last night’s match against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Bobylev is currently on a six-game point streak (1g-7a) dating back to January 15th. The Russian-born forward has now tallied 14 points (2g-12a) in 10 straight home contests. FRESHLY INKED: The Royals have recently signed prospects Mitchell Prowse and Kaid Oliver to WHL Standard Player Agreements. Prowse has been called up by the Royals as an Affiliated Player (AP) for last night’s and tonight’s games. The Kelowna, BC native currently plays for the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) Midget Prep White Team of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). In 43 games with the club, Prowse has recorded 20 points (4g-16a) and 46 minutes in penalties. Oliver plays for the Arizona Bobcats Under-16 AAA team of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL). In 21 games with the Bobcats the product of White Rock, BC has collected 24 points (16g-8a) and eight penalty minutes. ROSTER BREAKDOWN: The 2015-16 Victoria Royals roster is composed as follows: AGE: 1995 – 3, 1996 – 3, 1997 – 9, 1998 – 6, 1999 – 3, 2000 - 1 LOCATION: B.C. – 11, Alberta – 4, Saskatchewan – 4, USA – 4, Europe – 2 2015-16 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE: Wednesday, Feburary 3rd vs Calgary Hitmen – 7:05 p.m. – SOFMC – Victoria, BC Friday, Feburary 5th @ Tri-City Americans – 7:05 p.m. – Toyota Center – Kennewick, WA
